Best Men’s Fragrances/Colognes for Summertime (2023)

I own most of the fragrances on this list and can vouch for them personally. You’ll see a lot of clones/dupes of popular men’s summer fragrances on this list. Why? I have a hard time justifying the price tag for most designer fragrances given how much the quality and performance have decreased over the years yet the price keeps going up.

I’m only featuring men’s summer fragrances that I own and can vouch for personally. After looking at my summer collection, these are the colognes I reach for most often during summertime.

When I first got Armaf Club De Nuit Iconic the scent didn’t last or project at all!

Thank goodness I bought it in January in preparation for summer because this allowed it time to macerate.

After sitting for 2 months it now performs well above average for a summertime fragrance.

Its scent profile and performance make this a versatile 3-season fragrance. You could get away with wearing it in winter but I personally prefer warmer scents in cold weather.

Performance: Projection is average for 1st 2 hours and I get 8-10 hours on my skin and days on my clothes.

This is a citrus and grapefruit bomb! The grapefruit smells so real it actually makes me thirsty in warm weather!

If you enjoy citrusy fragrances this is a must-buy. The quality for the price is outstanding.

Performance: Projection is average for 1st 2 hours and I get 8-10 hours on my skin and days on my clothes.

I’ve owned Versace Pour Homme before and this is a deeper, better performing, and creamier version. The vanilla orchid really sets this scent apart and adds some depth.

I prefer this over Versace and I think it’s redundant to own both.

Performance: Average projection for 2 hours, I get 6-8 hours on my skin and a day on clothes.

I see people comparing this to Bleu De Chanel and I don’t smell what they’re smelling. To me, it has maybe a 50% similarity. So, don’t buy this thinking it’s a Bleu De Chanel clone because it’s not.

They both share similar notes of grapefruit, ginger, lemon, and jasmine but the amount you smell of each is very different in both fragrances.

Bleu De Chanel is much more piercing with the lemon and grapefruit initially which hands off to a more prominent ginger note than Missoni.

MIssoni is more linear and smells similar from start to finish. Bleu De Chanel smells very different from beginning to end.

This is one of my favourite dumb reaches and gym scents. It’s very safe and easy on the nose, and mass pleasing.

Performance: Projection is average for 1st 1.5-2 hours and I get 5-6 hours on my skin and a day on my clothes.

I’ve heard people say this is the offspring of Bleu De Chanel and Versace Dylan Blue if they were to have a baby.

I agree to an extent. I get more Dylan Blue than Bleu De Chanel though, likely due to the use of heavy Ambroxan.

This is a creamier version of both and I prefer this to both of those fragrances.

I’ve used Bvlgari Aqva Marine for many years, even before I got into collecting fragrances. It was love at first sniff for me.

It was unlike anything I’d ever smelt, and still is.

This scent immediately puts my mind on the air of a beach on a tropical island. It’s uplifting, soothing, and relaxing.

Its performance is on the lower end compared to other fragrances on this list but its scent makes up for it.

Performance: Projection is average for 1st 2 hours and I get 4-6 hours on my skin and a day on clothes.

This is the big brother of Bvlgari Aqva Marine. It’s a little darker, greener, and deeper. To me, this is the spring and summer night version of Aqva.

Given my taste and the number of options in my collection, I don’t reach for this one all that often.

I tend to like sweeter and creamier scents, whereas Dylan Blue is peppery.

It’s a great scent and an icon in the fragrance world. It’s also very mass appealing, in part due to the heavy use of ambroxan and being shower gelly.

It’s loved by most, especially women.

Performance: Projection is above average for 1st 2 hours and I get 8-10 hours on my skin and days on my clothes.

Light Blue is an iconic summer scent. It’s so fresh, slightly spicy, and easy to wear. I can’t imagine someone not liking this.

This is a great choice for beginners but may seem a bit boring to more experienced noses.

Although I’ve never tried Delina Exclusif, what I can tell you is Club De Nuit Imperiale is the most unique and intoxicating female fragrance I’ve ever put my nose on. My wife shares this sentiment as well.

I gave Imperiale to my wife for Valentine’s Day. It was love at first sniff for both of us. It’s all she wore for weeks out of her 20 perfumes or so.

Within a couple of days of owning it, she asked me to get a backup bottle, so I did lol.

It’s by far her most complimented perfume. She’s a popular lash artist and her clients are constantly asking what she’s wearing. She wants to keep this scent all to herself so she replies “My husband got it for me”.

This stuff is nuclear so be careful how much you spray. My wife’s business partner mentioned her perfume was too strong a couple of times. This was with her wearing 6-8 sprays.

I’ll pick up my wife after a 12-hour day and I can smell it on her as soon as she gets in the car and I love it!

Opening: Said to be 90% identical to Delina Exclusif. Smooth, non-alcohol opening.

Drydown: Said to be 90%+ identical to Delina Exclusif. The incense is a little strong in Imperiale, giving it a slightly smokier nuance. Imperiale is said to be less powdery and more creamy as well.

Performance: Said to perform equal to/better than Delina Exclusif’s most recent formulations. 12+ hours on skin and eternal on clothes. A strong projection for 3-4 hours and then settles to a strong sent bubble.

I own this fragrance, and although I’ve never tried Ultramale, I can attest to the quality of Ramz Silver. Out of my 70+ fragrances, it’s one of my best-performing.

Opening: Said to contain lots of pear just like Ultra Male. However, Ramz Silver is said to be more screechy in the opening and gets closer to Ultra Male in scent after 20min.

Drydown: Said to be 90-95% similar to Ultra Male. Said to be fresher, lighter, less sweet, and not as much pear as compared to Ultra Male.

Performance: Ramz Silver has above-average performance and better performance than most recent formulations of Ultra Male. I get around 2 hours of above-average projection, 10+ hours on my skin, and days on clothes.

Afnan 9pm is overhyped in my opinion. While Ramz Silver is a hidden gem that doesn’t get the attention it deserves.

Differences between 9pm and Ramz Silver?

During my research, those who have both 9pm and Ramz Silver commonly note that Ramz Silver is a slightly closer version to Ultra Male.

Ramz Silver has the infamous pear note in the notes whereas 9pm does not. It also has some musk which adds depth to it.

Ramz Silver is also said to be a slightly deeper, less sweet, and more mature version of 9pm.

Opening: Is fresher, and lighter and is missing the infamous pear notes found in Ultra Male. It’s more ‘bubblegummy’ than Ultra Male.

Drydown: Is said to get a little further away from Ultra Male in the dry down. It’s not as loud or in your face. It’s sweeter, less tart, and lacks the depth found in Ultra Male.

Performance: Above average projection for 2-3 hours. Lasts 10+ hours on the skin and days on clothes. This may not be the case for newer batches though.

I’ve tested Detour Noir and Layton side by side and came to the following conclusions below.

Opening: Detour Noir is louder and slightly screechier compared to Layton. Otherwise, they are nearly identical.

Drydown: Becomes closer to Layton in the dry down. I’d say 90-95% identical. I put Detour Noir and Layton on test strips and got my wife to smell their dry downs. I asked which one she preferred and she chose Detour Noir. That’s how good this clone is.

Performance: Projects heavily for 2-3 hours and lasts 10+ hours on my skin, and eternal on clothes. I’d classify Detour Noir as beast mode and is one of my best-performing (if not my best) fragrances out of the 70+ I own.

Costume National I is near niche quality. It’s so smooth and well-blended, which is apparent as soon as it’s sprayed.

I don’t think the notes presented are accurate. I don’t see how this can smell the way it does, like Layton, with those notes.

Opening: Very smooth and has the Layton vibe. I find it not as sweet and a little spicier in the opening.

Drydown: The most notable differences here are the leather and amber. The leather provides a deeper and darker richness than Layton. The leather adds a masculinity that places the scent somewhere between Layton and Layton Exclusif. The amber provides the sweet warmth but lacks the sweet vanilla accord found in Layton.

Performance: Above average projection for 2 hours, I get 10+ hours of longevity on my skin and days on clothes.

I also have to admit, when I first sprayed this on my hand I was taken back, and not in a good way. I was so off-put that I wasn’t sure I’d ever wear it.

I gave it a chance and I’m glad I did. The more I wear it the more I like it. I find the scent quite alluring.

Opening: Is a little harsh (has been compared to lemon pledge) for the first 20 minutes or so. Is this a deal breaker? I don’t think so. I simply apply it for at least 20 minutes before I know people will smell me. Once the lemon subsides, Aventus starts to come through.

Drydown: This is where Club De Nuit Intense Man shines! The more it dries the better it gets! The citruses fade and the birch in this fragrance gives it a woody and slightly smokey dry-down. Those who’ve smelled Creed Aventus typically rate Club De Nuit Intense Man as a 90+ % clone/dupe in the dry-down.

Performance: Club De Nuit Intense Man is beast mode on me, I can’t speak for others. I get 24 hours on my skin and eternal on my clothes! The scent doesn’t disappear until I wash them. Projection is quite heavy for the first 3-4 hours as I’m constantly smelling it around me and based on comments I know others do too.

Drydown: Those who’ve owned both Aventus and Supremacy Silver said the 2 are barely distinguishable.

Performance: Projects moderately for 2-3 hours and last 8+ hours on the skin, a day on clothes.

If Supremacy Silver is a closer clone to Aventus than Club De Nuit Intense Man, why did I rate it #2?

For 2 reasons, CDNIM gets crazy compliments and performs out of this world. Given that CDNIM is also a really close clone/dupe of Aventus, I gave it the #1 spot because it mops the floor in those 2 categories.

Parfums De Marly Kalan is known to be a polarizing scent, people tend to love it or hate it. I’m one of those people who loves the scent PDM Kalan! This may sound odd because I’ve never actually smelled Kalan! So, how is it possible I love the scent of Kalan?

I ordered the cheapest clone/dupe of Kalan I could find, Maison Alhambra’s Kalos. It gave me a general idea of Kalan’s scent profile. And for me, I enjoyed this scent from the first sniff.

It’s nothing I’ve ever smelled before, captivating me with its’ mysterious curiosity.

After several wearings, it grew on me more and more. My liking for the scent grew into love, convincing me to upgrade to a higher-quality clone.

I ordered the premium clone/dupe of Kalan called Amber Oud Exclusif Sport, also by Maison Alhambra, and boy and I am glad I did!

The quality of this fragrance is very apparent as soon as I put my nose to it.

The upgrade in quality over the other clone, Kalos, is noticeable at first spray. No more alcohol opening. No more rough and edgy opening. Much more depth, body, and well-roundedness.

Although Amber Oud Exclusif Sport isn’t as close to Kalos in scent, it’s miles ahead in quality. That’s why I placed it ahead of Kalos on this list.

Opening: Is about 85% the same as Kalan in my opinion. The biggest difference is Amber Oud Exclusif Sport is missing the blood orange that Kalan has and replaces it with saffron. This makes for a less citrusy and more linear opening. I actually prefer the opening of Amber Oud Exclusif Sport.

Drydown: Remains about 85% the same as Kalan in my opinion. Amber Oud Exclusif Sport doesn’t have the earthiness or depth that Kalan carries in the dry down.

Performance: Amber Oud Exclusif Sport has above-average performance. I get around 2 hours of above-average projection, 6+ hours on my skin, and days on clothes.

Opening: After an initial blast of alcohol, the opening is rough around the edges. It starts to come together after a minute or two. Once it settles, it’s about 95% the same as Kalan in my opinion.

Drydown: Lacks depth and body, and starts to lose the Kalan DNA slightly. Doesn’t contain that earthiness found in Kalan that adds some masculinity to the scent. I get more florals at this point than I do in Kalan or Amber Oud Exclusif Sport.

Performance: Moderate projection for 1-2 hours. Lasts 5-6 hours on my skin and a day on clothes.

It’s also not my favourite scent on this list, I much prefer the scent of Afnan’s Tuxedo Brown which takes the #2 spot.

Opening: Is said to be identical to YSL Tuxedo for the average nose.

Drydown: Is said to be identical to YSL Tuxedo for the average nose. One thing that’s been mentioned and I’d have to agree is The Tux lacks some depth in the dry-down. This is also one of the main reasons I prefer Turathi Brown over The Tux, along with its superior performance.

Performance: The Tux has modest performance. I get around 2 hours of moderate projection and an additional 4-6 hours of a skin scent.

Turathi Brown is my preferred clone/dupe of YSL’s Tuxedo. It’s not a 1:1 scent profile like The Tux. It’s about 80% Tuxedo and 20% of their own twist. I prefer this scent to The Tux.

Turathi Brown is slightly sweeter than The Tux with the vanilla added, and I prefer sweeter scents in general. It’s not very sweet by any means, just a hint.

Turathi Brown smells higher quality with much more depth and outperforms The Tux by a long shot. If you want to get noticed, Turathi Brown is for you.

Opening: This is where Turathi Brown smells most like Tuxedo as it has Patchouli as a top note instead of a Heart or Base note. It starts off slightly woodier though.

Drydown: This is where Turathi Brown takes its’ own path as it dries down. The Patchouli slowly fades while Vanilla and Rose start to become more prominent than Tuxedo. It’s an absolutely beautiful and elegant scent.

Performance: Above average projection for 2-3 hours. Lasts 8+ hours on my skin and days on clothes.

Drydown: Is said to get closer and closer to the DNA of Bleu De Chanel EDP as it dries down. The citruses fade and the slightly sweet woods take over with incense off in the background. The one difference seems to be Iconic doesn’t have the same depth as Bleu De Chanel, but otherwise, the scents are nearly identical.

Performance: Club De Nuit Iconic projects moderately for the first 2-3 hours and then stays fairly close to the skin thereafter. Lasts 6-8 hours on my skin (could be different for you). Bleu De Chanel isn’t known for having a great projection and being more intimate. Iconic is no different.

Opening: Lacks the zesty punch that’s famous in Bleu De Chanel. It comes much flatter and more linear. I find the mint is quite prominent in Tag-Him, but that could just be my nose.

Drydown: This scent is fairly linear and doesn’t change a whole lot from the opening. It dries down to a very pleasant scent. It may not smell a lot like Bleu De Chanel but it carries the same vibe. It’s missing the woods and incense from Bleu De Chanel. I actually enjoy this scent quite a bit though and have received compliments on it. I love the freshness of the mint that stays throughout the dry-down.

Performance: I was quite surprised by the performance of Tag-Him as I wasn’t expecting much. It has better projection than Iconic and projects for 2-3 hours. Based on my compliments, it projects at least an arm’s length. The scent stays on my skin for 6-8 hours.

Opening: Not as heavy on the citruses as Bleu De Chanel. It is less in your face and settles quickly. I don’t find the opening as flat as Tag-Him, this lands somewhere between.

Drydown: MIssoni Pour Homme is also a linear scent. It doesn’t change much as it dries from the opening. The dry-down is said to be less woody than Bleu De Chanel and not as deep. I find the overall scent from beginner to end a little powdery, likely from the lavender, which Bleu De Chanel doesn’t have.

Performance: This projects for 2 hours or so off of my skin. After that, it gets close to the skin and fades after 5-6 hours.

I enjoy this scent very much as has become one of my go-to dumb reaches.

I prefer this over Tag-Him.

Versace Eros is one of my favourite fragrances. There’s just something about the prominent vanilla/mint that I’m in love with. The apple and wood in the background are blended perfectly and make themselves known just the right amount.

Before I purchased Eros I’d never smelled the official version before. I did, however, try one of the clones/dupes below which sold me on the scent.

A week later, after wearing the clone a few times, I purchased a 100ml bottle of Eros EDP.

Going by scent alone, this is a great clone. Amazing in fact. It has more similarities to the EDP version of Ero in my opinion.

Opening: Similar to Eros EDP, Versencia Oro has no green apple and the citruses are toned down in the opening. The vanilla and mint are quite prominent in both from the get-go.

Drydown: I find the scent to be fairly linear with this one, as in it doesn’t morph as it dries. The prominent vanilla and mint scent stays consistent.

Performance: Versencia Oro projects well for the first hour or so and then stays fairly close to the skin thereafter. Lasts 6-7 hours on my skin (could be different for you) and have smelled it days later on my clothes.

Clone/Dupe Of: Versace Eros EDT

I’ve gathered much of my information on English Laundry’s Oxford Bleu from Fragrantica.

Opening: Has more apples and citruses and less mint than Eros.

Drydown: Dries down to vanilla + sandalwood and the mint fades away. This is a significant difference to Eros because the mint stays with you through the life of the scent. The vanilla/mint combo is a signature of Versace Eros. If that’s what you’re looking for then English Laundry Oxford Bleu may not be the best clone of Versace Eros for you.

Performance: Longevity appears to average around 7 hours with moderate projection for the first couple of hours. Sillage seems to be the biggest complaint when it comes to performance with this one. This projects better than Oro which will create a larger and longer-lasting scent bubble around you. People will smell you more with this.
