caregiving

A Message To All Caregivers…It’s Not About Us

From 2009 to this very day I have not gone to one single appointment with Allie (my wife) to see her oncologist. Not because I don’t want to go, but because she doesn’t want me to go.

Now, you might be thinking that is very strange, as many of the people in my life just don’t get it.

At first, I thought that her decision was absurd, nobody should go to see their oncologist alone. They need moral and emotional support, the 2nd set of ears, and maybe a 2nd opinion.

Every single one of my family members reinforced my futile beliefs at the time. This encouraged me to push my personal beliefs onto Allie even harder. My persistence in trying to enforce my personal beliefs upon Allie led to numerous heated debates and arguments.

I started to resent her for her decision, and she started to resent me for my persistent pressure on her to cave into my personal beliefs. I cannot remember exactly how long this went back and forth for and if I was to guess I would say a couple of years.

I couldn’t accept her decision at the time because of what I made her decision mean

The stress this placed on our relationship nearly broke us apart and nearly killed her, literally. For those of you who don’t know anything about the relationship between stress and cancer, stress significantly hinders the body to fight cancer (or any other disease for that matter) and leaves cancer to treat the body like an amusement park, doing whatever it is wants whenever it wants.

I made it about ME…I wasn’t listening

For me to really “hear” what Allie was telling me I needed to put my personal vendetta aside and truly listen.

The day I truly understood that she was the one with cancer and not myself, was the day I realized that it was her decision to make all along.

If I did not like her decision that was MY problem, but I made it OUR problem.

I still remember the thoughts that reinforced my personal beliefs at the time:

If she doesn’t want me to go with her that means:

“she doesn’t trust me enough, what have I done to create this distrust?”

“I don’t deserve this, what did I do to deserve this?”

“I’m not worthy enough for her to bring me with her”

“My feelings aren’t important to her”

“If I accept her decision then that will confirm all of my thoughts to be true”

Not one of these thoughts turned out to be true!

And to explore the opposite of these thoughts…

If she does want me to go with her that means:

“I AM trusted”

“I AM deserving”

“I AM worthy”

“MY feelings are important to her”

Ultimately, I wanted to go because it I thought it would make me feel better, not because it was the best decision for Allie but because it was the best decision for myself.

What I learned

Each and every one of my thoughts was about me. I couldn’t accept her decision at the time because of what I made her decision mean. I totally blinded myself to what Allie truly needed from me at the time, and that was love and understanding, not me badgering her about my personal beliefs.

When it comes to dealing with cancer or any other illness, there is no best way to do anything. There is only your way, their way, and everyone else’s way, with none of these ways being right or wrong.

When you release attachments to your personal beliefs and understand they are not universal truths, you are free from yourself and of service to the one you are trying to help.

Lesson: Are you blinded by YOUR personal beliefs?

Whether you are a caregiver or not, you can find out if your personal beliefs are blinding you to other people’s needs through self-observation of your thoughts, emotions, and actions up until now. You must be honest with yourself or this will not work.

These observations will tell you everything you need to know. If your observations lead you to a path of “ME, ME, ME” and it’s all about how “I” feel then there is a good chance you are blinded by your personal beliefs.

Beyond that, have you put yourself in the other persons’ shoes in an attempt to try and truly understand their needs?

Can you remember a time when you were blinded by YOUR personal beliefs?

I would love to hear from you in the comments below!

what causes stress

The One And Only Cause of Stress – Can You Guess What It Is?

WebMD and many other “authorities” are pointing many people searching for the cause of their stress in the completely wrong direction. It’s time to get this one right.

Unfortunately, WebMD has two of the most popular articles on the causes of emotional and psychological stress and they are offering some of the worst information, how ironic right?

Article 1 and Article 2 are blaming nearly everything outside of you, essentially claiming you are a victim of circumstance most of the time. No wonder so many people are stressed, with thoughts like that you are doomed to live a life of chronic emotional and psychological stress.

I guess I should give them credit for their feeble attempt at sourcing the only cause of stress when they said this “Sometimes the stress comes from inside, rather than outside.”.

What Does WebMD Claim To Cause All Of Our Emotional and Psychological Stress?

To bring you closer to the truth of the one and only cause of stress I will bring truth each and every so-called stressor that is listed in both of WebMD’s articles.

As you read on you may resonate with some of the so-called stressors and I want you to know that by no means am I minimizing the challenge of each situation.

The truth: Your thoughts that create your unrealistic expectations are the cause of your stress

Stressful thoughts such as:

“They should know how to do that by now”

“I shouldn’t have to ask twice”

“If I did that for them then they should do this for me”

Have you figured out now what is the ONLY cause of stress?

If you guessed your thoughts you would be wrong. At this point, I can only assume you are extremely confused and I am loving the suspense.

If it is not thoughts that are the only cause of stress then what is it?

OK, OK….are you ready for it?

Are you sure?

It is the thoughts that you believe that are the only cause of your stress!

I would like to say this again as I cannot stress the importance of truly grasping what I am saying.

The thoughts you believe that are the only ones cause your stress

If you don’t believe me, re-read all of the examples from above, but this time read them without believing a single thought from the examples. In fact, how do you imagine you would feel if you believed the opposite of each of those thoughts?

I would like to now review a statement from WebMD that I mentioned in the beginning of the article that says “Sometimes the stress comes from inside, rather than outside.”.

The truth is that “Stress ALWAYS comes from the inside, rather than outside.”

We all have similar thoughts but we all believe different things, how?

How can two people respond differently to the very same situation even if they have the very same thoughts? They each believe different thoughts.

Once you start believing a thought you now give that thought more attention. This attention will lead to a feeling and this feeling will lead to a response. Therefore, different thoughts believed different responses.

Wrapping Up

I sincerely hope that finding out the one and only true cause of your emotional and psychological stress has been an uplifting and liberating experience for you. Believe me, this is one understanding that can truly change your life forever.

I encourage you to take control of the one cause of your stress by only believing in the thoughts that serve you.

what should i do with my life

“What Should I Do With My Life?” – Ask Better Qestions

Does This Sound Like You?

“What should I do with my life?”

“I don’t know what to do with my life”

“What to do with my life…”

“What do I want to do with my life?”

“What to do in life…”

“What am I doing with my life?”

These are the most common questions and statements people are seeking answers to all over the internet, can you believe that?

These are disempowering questions and statements that essentially got you to where you are now.

Read on if you would like to learn how to change that.

This is not an article full of fluffy random tips like the one on themuse.com that you have probably stumbled across while searching your questions on Google.

You will come across some transformational questions that have an opportunity to transform your outlook on your life. You just might actually figure out what to do with your life. And yes, that is possible to do from reading just one article.

Take out a pen and paper because you will have some work to do!

The answers are inside of you, not on Google

You do know what to do with your life, you just haven’t asked the right questions yet to bring the answers to your conscious. This is my attempt to facilitate the start of that journey for you.

It is all about the unique you, and not your convoluted beliefs influenced by everything outside of you.

“What should I do with my life?”

This has to be one of the most disempowering questions if you really want to find out what to do with your life.

Read my post on the word “should” to get a deeper understanding of the consequences of using this word.

The question “what should I do with my life?” will take you down a road of hypothetical options influenced by judgements from people and society instead of yourself.

A better question to ask yourself is “what do I want to do with my life?”. Now we are getting somewhere. It can be easy to confuse your “wants” and “shoulds”.

If you aren’t sure which one is influencing you then just to ask yourself “WHY?”.

Why do you want to do that with your life?

Why do you think you should do that with your life?

It is a “should” if you get answers like:

I should do that with my life because…

I should do that with my life because I can make more money

I should do that with my life because that is what my parents want me to do

I should do that with my life because it is the family business

I should do that with my life because everyone I know thinks I should

I should do that with my life because I don’t know what else to do

It is a “want” if you get answers like:

I want to do that with my life because…

I want to do that with my life because I am passionate about it

I want to do that with my life because I love doing it

I want to do that with my life because it brings me joy

I want to do that with my life because it brings meaning to my life

This brings us to the next question…

“What do I want to do with my life?”

This is a much more empowering question to ask than “what should I do with my life?” because you are the only influence towards the answers to that question. It is all about the unique you, and not your convoluted beliefs influenced by everything outside of you. There is a catch though, you must be able to determine your wants as completely separate and not influenced at all by any of your “should do’s” in life.

This will require some soul-searching and a higher awareness of the influences behind your current beliefs. As it is your beliefs that will ultimately be guiding all of the answers you will get when you ask yourself “what should I do with my life?”

How to find out what you want to do with your life

By no means is what I am about to say a roadmap to finding out what you want to do with life. What it is, is a rock solid guide that will point you in the right direction, an empowering direction oppose to the dead end you find yourself at.

Questions, questions, questions! That is what will uncover what you truly want to do with your life. They must be the right questions of course.

Questions to help discover what you want to do with your life

What are you passionate about?

What brings you immense joy?

What were you doing the last time you felt like time stood still?

What else has ever given you this feeling?

What were you doing in life when you felt like your life had the most meaning?

What is something you haven’t done but have always wanted to do?

What are some things you have always done because you wanted to and not because you felt you had to?

What would you do if you knew you could not fail?

Now, what you should notice is that there are certain answers that tend to overlap in some way. These are the answers that you want to put your focus toward.

Here’s a hypothetical example:

What are you passionate about? Animals, golf, politics

What brings you immense joy? Spending time with my pets, golfing with friends, spending time with family

What were you doing the last time you felt like time stood still? At the park with my dog

What else has ever given you this feeling? Pet sitting for friends, my honeymoon, spending time at the zoo, political rallies

What were you doing in life when you felt like your life had the most meaning? I was volunteering at the animal shelter when I was younger

What is something you haven’t done but have always wanted to do? Own my own business, write a letter to the president

What are some things you have always done because you wanted to and not because you felt you had to? Pet sit, play with my dog, go golfing, stay up to date with politics

What would you do if you knew you could not fail? I would start my own business

Now obviously since I made this up it is quite easy to pinpoint the key drivers here. There are two major drivers:

  1. This person LOVES spending time with animals
  2. This person wants to start their own business but doesn’t believe they can

The answer to this persons’ question of “what do I want to do with my life?” has become much more clear. What they really want is:

  1. To own their own business
  2. This business will involve spending time with animals

I’m On Vacation

Every single day ’cause I love my occupation

– Dirty Heads

At this point, you can narrow it down to plenty of different options that fit those criteria. The next question to ask would be “which option feels right?”

“What am I doing with my life?”

“What am I doing with my life?” has to potential to be a wonderful reality check for you. That is, if you have the courage to look at your life right now, as it is, and face the truth. The fact that you are even asking this question shows courage.

This question places all of the responsibility on you, which is a fantastic start. Whatever it is you are doing right now, you created it. First, it started with a thought, and then you manifested the life you are currently living as you know it through those accumulated thoughts.

“I don’t know what to do with my life”

Sorry, but saying “I don’t know what yo do with my life” will only reinforce the belief that you actually don’t know, there are no answers here. I have a question for you… if you don’t know, then who does know what to do with your life? Right…moving along.

“What to do with my life…”

Same as above.

“What to do in life…”

Same as above.

In case your wondering…

I live and breathe all of what I have discussed here on finding out what to do with your life. I absolutely love what I do as a personal trainer, coach, and blogger. I wouldn’t trade what I do for any other job or amount of money. I truly hope that one day you can say the same.

Love what you do, do what you love, the money can be created!

holding space for someone

8 Tips On Holding Space For Yourself and Someone Else

I wish I knew what holding space meant years ago. I could have avoided caregiver burnout, emotional turmoil, numerous arguments with my wife, and the black cloud that followed me on a daily.

Holding space is largely untalked about, yet is so important for your emotional health and the ability to be with the emotions of another. Learning how to hold space will completely transform your relationship with yourself and others.

What does holding space mean?

This is the definition given by Carol Webster in her phenomenal book The Holding Space Practice

  • Honour individual without judgement, first self, then family, then others
  • Suspension of anxiety over expected outcomes
  • Accepting “now” as it really is without undue regret or control
  • Allowing self and others to choose as we avoid inappropriate pressure, collusion, manipulation, and/or exploitation

The way I like to explain it to people is:

Holding space is creating a safe, non-judgmental environment that allows yourself and/or others to be authentic, expressing thoughts and emotions without hesitation or worry.

Why is holding space so important?

Anyone who has ever been a caregiver to someone with cancer, or any other illness, knows that the emotions in the relationship between the caregiver and the person being cared for can reach a peak quite easily. It’s very easy to get lost in all the confusing emotions. It can also lead to a very damaged and/or confusing relationship with yourself and/or the other person.

I believe holding space with love is one of the greatest gifts you can offer another.

This is where being able to hold space becomes so, so important as a cancer caregiver. There will be numerous very intense moments throughout the journey. There will be feelings of despair, celebration, anger, confusion, sadness, frustration, and the list goes on.

Being able to hold space for yourself and others during these emotional times will transform your relationship with yourself and others. Holding space will allow the moment to be as it is without trying to change it or judge it. This frees you up to be as you truly are in that moment. This removes resistance to the moment and allows love to shine through!

How to hold space For Yourself and Someone Else

You have to learn to hold space for yourself first before you can hold space for anyone else.

This is where the work has to be done. I can tell you from experience, it will take some time to get to a point where you can hold space for yourself, most likely months.

I can also tell you from experience that being able to hold space for yourself AND the one you are caring for is extremely rewarding. A feeling accompanies it that I cannot compare to anything else.

Learn To Hold Space For Someone With 8 Simple Understandings:

  1. Being without doing
  2. Bravely seeing truth
  3. Feeling feelings without words
  4. Allowing without trying
  5. Gently noticing with curiosity
  6. Staying in the space without giving in to distraction
  7. A place where time and space are fluid
  8. Love is the end result, it IS the space

1. Being without doing

These days, if you don’t have a “To-Do List” that you can unravel to the floor, well my friend, you just aren’t “busy” enough. If you aren’t “doing” something then you are lazy. Most people are so concerned about their “To-Do List” that they completely neglect just “Being”. What do I mean by this?

When is the last time you allowed yourself just 5 minutes to not do anything GUILT FREE?

To experience yourself feeling truly alive in this life you live without any guilt that you aren’t “doing” something? Just allowing yourself to be authentic, as you are, at that moment? Meditation is a great way to re-learn how to do this. I say re-learn because there was a time in your life when you knew how to do this, most likely when you were a child and parental and societal conditioning have yet to cloud your judgment.

Being without doing is extremely important for caregivers to stay in touch with themselves and to not lose themselves, which is so easy to happen. What the person you are caring for needs is YOU. Having the “To-Do List” completed while you have lost yourself in the process leaves the one you are caring for feeling alone and feeling alone is a cancer patient’s worst fear. Help them overcome this fear by BEING there, by BEING YOU.

When it comes to “being without doing” while you are holding space for the one you are caring for, this simply means be authentic, present, there is nothing you need to do or say at that moment except be there for them.

2. Bravely seeing truth

First, you need to understand that your truths are only true to you, they are not absolute or universal. One shift in perspective and your truth becomes false. This is extremely important to keep in mind during those really tough emotional conversations with the one you are caring for. It is OK to express your opinion, just do it with an open mind, and in a non-forceful way, loving way.

Being able to bravely see truth starts with you. Any suppressed, or repressed, parts of yourself, or your dark side, that you haven’t been brave enough to accept as truth will need to be accepted with love as YOU. For example, many cancer caregivers, myself included, resent their role or the one they are caring for, at some point in their journey. Bravely seeing truth is recognizing the thoughts that are creating this feeling you have and facing it head-on as opposed to repressing it.

3. Feeling feelings without words

How do you know what you are feeling if you don’t label what you are feeling? What you are feeling is not the label you have been conditioned to give it, nor is it positive or negative, you only label it so.

How do you know you feel anything at all? Now that you are left without words, there is only one other way to know what you are feeling, and that is to feel it. Where in your body do you feel it? What does the energy feel like? What is the sensation? This is feeling feelings.

Caregiver burnout, compassion fatigue, anxiety, stress, and depression are all common symptoms of being a caregiver. Not doing these first three steps towards holding space is a major cause for this. Allow yourself to be without doing, notice your thoughts and see the truth, and fully experience the feelings generated by those thoughts by feeling them.

4. Allowing without trying

Trying to take control requires you to have made a judgment about what is. Most times this comes in the form of a “should”. Trying too hard is trying to control the outcome. Allowing is accepting things as they are at the present moment.

Allowing can easily be confused with being passive, as many people have been conditioned to believe that if they aren’t taking control then they are being passive. Allowing is being mindful and intentionally in the present moment. Understanding what you can and cannot control at that moment. This allows space to be created that will allow you to respond to what is instead of resisting what is by trying to take control.

As a caregiver, during tense conversations, this can be the difference between reacting with anger and responding with empathy.

5. Gently noticing with curiosity

If you want to learn how to do this, pay attention to how children respond to life’s experiences or think back to when you were a child. Remember how curious you were about everything.

Gently noticing with curiosity requires you to get out of your head and into the moment. This is the opposite of what most of us do as adults. We stay in our head and we take all of our assumptions as absolute truths and lose our desire for exploration in the process. If you suspended all of your assumptions and beliefs momentarily do you think that you might be a tad bit more curious?

For example, as a cancer caregiver, you may have strong opinions towards how certain things “should” be done. Instead of seeing your “shoulds” as absolute truths (which they aren’t), ask yourself: “Where did that thought come from? What led to me thinking that? Is it absolutely true? What else could be true?”

6. Staying in the space without giving in to distraction

It is human nature to get distracted by your very own thoughts. As soon as you start listening to, and believing the story you are creating in your head you are no longer holding space. You are no longer present in the moment or neutral in that space.

The key is to constantly be aware of what thoughts are going through your head and the feelings they are creating without giving in to them. Acknowledge them, don’t give them attention, it is when you give them the attention that you start getting caught up in your story and stop holding space.

Now, this may sound like a very difficult task to you, and I am not going to lie, it is very difficult to do. The reward for being able to do this is far greater than any frustrations you may go through while practicing staying in the space. The good news is you can practice not giving in to distraction at any time, for anyone, including yourself. You have plenty of time to practice, in fact, all you have is time.

Meditation is a great way to practice this. There is an amazing free app that you can download to your phone called Insight Timer with over 7000 guided meditations on it that is great for beginner and experienced meditators alike.

7. A place where time and space are fluid

Think back to a memory when you were so in the moment with what you doing, and who you were being that time completely escaped you. You were completely unaware of time and you were in the “zone”, this “zone” is your space and once you enter into this space, time and space become one.

This is the space where there are no words, thoughts, feelings, or judgments, there is just you. This is the space where you feel the safest and truest of who you are.

8. Love is the end result, it IS the space

You can only give what you have inside. Therefore, you must love yourself unconditionally first before you can do so for anyone else. You must love all that you are, including all of your sacred stories that you would not dare tell anyone. When you learn to hold space for yourself you learn unconditional love for yourself.

Once you have accepted yourself as is, loving yourself unconditionally, you may now do so for others. Now you are in a space where your own stories will not dilute the space you are attempting to hold for someone else.

what are the three principles

What Are The Three Principles? A Life Transforming Understanding

Nothing changes on the outside, but everything’s different on the inside.

– MIchael Neill

A couple of months ago, as I was reading Michael Neill‘s amazing book “Supercoach“, he mentioned an understanding called “the three principles” without really explaining what it is, thanks, Michael. This led me to do a Google search for “What are the three principles?”.

As soon as I discovered what these three principles are I just knew this was it, it clicked, something inside of me shifted, I could feel it. Most people have a hard time understanding the Three Principles when they first learn of them, for me it was different, not only did I understand it instantly, I experienced them instantly. This may be because I have contemplated life and the human experience on numerous occasions, or it may be because I was pulled towards them for a reason, who knows.

Now it is your turn to learn the Three Principles, don’t get frustrated if you do not understand them right away, it is perfectly normal that you don’t. Trying to understand the principles will actually take you further away from them because you are them, we all are.

What I recommend you do is let this information plant a seed, don’t try to do anything with it. Just notice how the Three Principles create your experience of life as you go on about your day. One moment, the seed you planted today will sprout.

What is a principle?

From the dictionary:

“a fundamental truth or proposition that serves as the foundation for a system of belief or behaviour or for a chain of reasoning.”

Gravity is an example of a principle. Whether you believe in gravity or not, it is always in action. It is this understanding that gravity is in action all of the time that prevents you from attempting to defy gravity by jumping from an obscene height. Keep this in mind as you learn about the three principles of the human experience, they too cannot be defied, no matter how hard you try.

Attempting to defy these three principles will only create resistance within your experience of life, the same way jumping in the air to temporarily defy gravity will create resistance against gravity’s magnetic force.

So…What Are The Three Principles?

I will try my best to articulate the three principles. Understanding the three principles intellectually is not the same as a wisdom based experiential understanding, they are not a thing, you cannot see them, you are them, and therefore you need to experience them. Truly experiencing how these three principles create your every life experience will transform your life forever. Let’s begin, shall we?

Principle #1 – Universal Mind

Principle #2 – Universal Consciousness

Principle #3 – Universal Thought

Principle #1 – Universal Mind

Universal Mind is the infinite formless energy behind all things. Some call it GOD, some call it a higher power, some call it the divine, and some like myself, believe in it but have no label for it, it just is. Universal Mind is the space where new thought and intuition come from. New thought is what fosters creativity, breakthroughs, paradigm shifts, epiphanies, and wisdom. You did not decide to think those thoughts, you did not create them, they came to you from the Universal Mind and you are aware of them, not the creator of them.

Principle #2 – Universal Consciousness

Consciousness is our ability to be aware. It is not just that we are aware at a level of experience, consciousness lies at the level that you can be aware that you are being aware. For example, being aware that you feel a pinch on your skin is not the same as being aware that you are aware of the feeling of the pinch on your skin. This can be a difficult concept to grasp for many people even though it is the absolute truth. Try to practice what I am describing here and once you truly experience it, and only when you truly experience it will you experience the truth of this. This cannot be intellectualized.

Principle #3 – Universal Thought

Regardless of the contents of your thoughts, this principle lies in the fact that you are a thinker, you have the ability to think. You would not be aware of these thoughts without principle #2 Universal Consciousness. Every experience you have had, and will ever have, has been, and always will be experienced through thought. Without your ability to think, each and every experience is completely neutral, it has no meaning until you have thought to create the meaning of that experience. Again, this is another difficult concept to grasp for many people. As you go about your day, just subtly create awareness that you are thinking, regardless of the contents of those thoughts. If you have not already, you will soon realize that none of your experiences mean anything until you think about them.

Final Thoughts On The 3 Principles

The Three Principles create every experience of your life, on a surface level they appear very simple, yet the more you explore them the more profound they become. They can be very difficult to explain to others in a way that can truly be understood. I have done my best, for now, to facilitate this meaning to you. As I progress through my journey I may be back to explore a different explanation to you, then again I may not, this may be my perfect explanation.

If you have any questions or insights regarding The 3 Principles I would love to hear from you below!

Welcome

This post is for you if you have a budget between $99-$5000 (payment plans are available for most programs) and want an easier time making a decision on which is the best online life coach certification program for you.

I’ve done the homework so you don’t have to

If you’re like me and you hate the tedious process of finding, researching, and comparing programs then you’ll love this post. I’ve made contact with some of the providers as well in order to give you as much information as possible to help you make an informed decision

Frequently Asked Questions

Have you had any clients or others seemingly value any one life coach program over the other?

I have not. In my opinion, you cannot go wrong between Natural Wellness Academy and Coach Training Alliance as the #1 choice, given that you have the funds. They are both of very high quality with plenty of live practice and mentoring. It really comes down to what kind of coach you want to be as Natural Wellness Academy is more spiritual based and Coach Training Alliance is more inside-out based.

Did you think the Universal Life Coach program was worth your time, and which specific program did you take?

Their program has been updated and much improved in my opinion. I will leave my original answer from a question I received, but it no longer stands as accurate.

The most critical feedback I had regarding their program in the past has been resolved.

Lacking course feedback has been cleared up with me by Ayisha herself, and is a non-issue.

Lacking live coaching practice has also been resolved.

I can honestly say I would recommend their program as an extremely viable option now

*Original answer:

I took the transformational life coaching certification. I don’t think it was worth my time, I stopped going through the modules about halfway through for this reason. Granted, I wasn’t a beginner to coaching or many of the subjects that were taught within the curriculum.
I had already taken the NLP certification from iNLP prior to this, which was definitely worth my time and money. I cannot say the same for UCI. Keep in mind, this is just my opinion, but I wouldn’t want to be coached by anyone who got their certification from UCI.

Do you face much skepticism for your NLP background?

I have never faced any skepticism regarding having an NLP background. In my experience, people don’t even care about my background nor do they ask me. As long as they think I can help them, that is all they really care about. An additional note to that, I don’t advertise my NLP background either because I don’t use its’ strategies. As I learned more about NLP, something about it didn’t feel right to me. It helped me realize that having a toolbox full of strategies for different problems was not the approach I wanted to take.

It became too superficial for me personally, I wanted to connect with people on a deeper level. I wanted to transform people from the most fundamental level, from the inside out. This is something NLP will not do. I liken NLP to a handyman who brings his toolbox whenever there is a problem, fixes it, and leaves. Whereas I wanted to transcend problems to get people to see there is nothing to fix, this is more of the inside-out approach that CTA will take. Therefore, it all depends on what kind of coach you want to be.

Where does niche fit in with each program?

I think all of the programs understand the value of niches.

iNLP is more NLP based, CTA is more inside-out based, and UCI is a blend of NLP, Positive Psychology, mindfulness, and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.

I think you will know what you want once you figure out how you want to coach, and on what level you want to impact people.

Why my change of heart regarding NLP?

My decision had nothing to do with the quality of the program, it was personal.

After taking their NLP combo course, I realized that NLP didn’t resonate with me. I have nothing against it, it’s just not for me.
I’m grateful for learning NLP as it pointed me in a different direction and I have since gone on a spiritual journey that contradicts much of what NLP is about; a manipulative toolbox for the mind.

I prefer to transcend mind-made challenges, oppose to seeing them as problems and deciding which tool will fix it.

But, that’s me.
If NLP resonates with you, go for it! I don’t think you’ll find a more complete NLP-based Life Coaching program.

Do I need a qualification to be a life coach?

Some professional coaches look to eventually get certified with the ICF (International Coach Federation). You do not have to take one specific program to qualify for this. The iNLP Center’s NLP Life Coach Certification and Coach Training Alliance’s Coach Training Program are perfect examples. Their certifications both qualify for 60 hrs toward an ICF Certification. You may then take a different program that is accredited by the ICF to add to your hours. For more info go to International Coach Federation.

Many people over concern themselves with credentials and qualifications (in my opinion).

Ask yourself this:

Would you rather invest in a coach (not accredited by the ICF) who was referred to you based on that referring person having had amazing results or a coach accredited by the ICF who has little evidence of producing real-world results?

Word of Warning (Udemy)

I understand how tempting it is to get ‘certified’ on Udemy for $15 (some of them even off great info)—but take it from someone who’s coached others—if you want to be a great coach you need live practice plus feedback. Also, you want an extensive curriculum that provides 1-to-1 feedback on your coursework, otherwise how else are you to know how you did?

If you’re serious about this, and it’s not just something else to learn, I strongly recommend you do not cut corners.

Every course over $1000 in this post offers live practice coaching sessions plus feedback on both your coaching and coursework.

Coach Training Alliance Review

I have to say, I am extremely impressed with the curriculum from Coach Training Alliance. If I wasn’t already enrolled at the iNLP Center there is a very good possibility I would have chosen Coaching Training Alliance based on the curriculum alone. Who knows, I may even take their program in the future since the two curriculums take a different approach and collaborate with each other.

Coaching From The Inside-Out

Based on the curriculum, the approach appears to be more an inside-out approach versus an outside-in approach. This completely aligns with my philosophy on coaching. The inside-out approach focuses on transforming one’s inner world in order to change their outer world. This is a different approach than the iNLP Center’s NLP approach where they are more strategy-based or outside-in coaching. This alone is the reason I would choose Coach Training Alliance over iNLP Center if I were to choose all over again.

Your Own Website

Luckily I have learned how to use WordPress over the years through learning affiliate marketing. I have spent hundreds of dollars to do so. You will learn the basics of how to build your own website using WordPress, The fact that this is part of their program is amazing and will save you plenty of time and money, trust me, this is a massive bonus.

Here’s an excerpt from their blog with more info:

A Program that Sets Us Apart

There is a Mind Dynamics module in just about every one of our cutting-edge certification programs in keeping with our philosophy that holism comes from incorporating Mind, Body & Spirit.  Mind is where my own journey as a healer began when I made the quantum leap from training in a more traditional psychotherapeutic approach to studying the subconscious mind, hypnotherapy, and Jungian psychoanalysis.  As an international trainer, I facilitated certification in hypnotherapy and mind dynamics in many countries and cultures.

The body is where I migrated when after years of grueling world travel, I developed an auto-immune disorder. Being incapacitated for some time galvanized me to learn about how food was impacting my health as well as other supportive lifestyle adaptations.

When we founded the Natural Wellness Academy in early 2013, my goal was to give holistic health coaches the superior advantage of being able to help their clients actually incorporate more lasting lifestyle habits, choices, and behaviors by incorporating Mind Dynamics into the curriculum.

The Mind’s Eye

The new Mind Dynamics Life Coach carries extra training and certification in basic hypnotherapy skills (Essential Hypnotherapy Skills) Having the ability to use hypnosis to help your clients control stress, conquer fears, boost their confidence and overcome negative habits will be a boon to your practice as more and more people are tuning in to the need to access more of their mind’s potential.

Blended Curricula Help You Case a Wider Net for Clients

Many of our coaching candidates are doing blended or hybrid curricula; in fact, a study done by our Board showed that 70% of NWA grads have gone on to take another program with us.  These are always offered at discounted prices.

For example, we have many Holistic Health & Life Coaching students who added the Essential Hypnotherapy Skills, recognizing that this would give their practice a “leg up.”  Here is a testimonial from Janett Nathal in Mexico City – she was part of our first graduating group from Mexico last year.

Describing the Mind Dynamics module and Essential Hypnotherapy Skills:

This program really represented a “before and after” in my life.  I got so many tools to apply to my own life – and to help other people in my coaching sessions.  I had always wondered about how much more we could accomplish by learning about the mind and now I’m totally convinced that hypnosis is a gigantic tool to help our clients achieve their healthy eating and lifestyle goals – really everything they want!  The mind can truly be our ally if we learn her language, and that is what hypnosis has taught me.   – Janett Nathal “BHealthy by Jane”

Natural Wellness Academy Review

I have personally been in contact with the founder, Dr. LJ. She is super friendly and I can feel her passion oozing through her emails. I get a real sense of hominess and genuineness from Dr. LJ.

She was completely transparent with me when it came to answering my questions. In my opinion, she went over and above what I had asked.

Here is a complete transcript from one of her emails:

Hi again, Rob – no worries!  Glad that you got the email and thanks for the kind comments.

There are definitely several aspects that set NWA apart:

  • The one-on-one mentoring is really significant for the students as they have someone to either cheerlead, counsel or motivate them to get through the program as well as finding an area of specialization or niche market.  All of our mentors are successful coaches and very upbeat people.
  • We take a very holistic MIND/BODY/SPIRIT approach and it’s kind of “impossible” for someone to go through our program and not have a lot of personal transformation and growth
  • We are starting to gear towards “hypno-coaching” – my background is as an international expert in the subconscious mind and in many cases, we will add on the Essential Hypnotherapy Skills as a gift or for a small fee to give the coaches an extraordinary extra skill and further reach.
  • Right now our “hot ticket” item is the CBD/Cannabis Coaching program, an explosive growth market.
  • We do blended programs for incredible pricing and we can also create hybrid certifications for students.  For instance, we have one woman who is doing a “Mind and Manifestation Dynamics”
  • About 70% of our graduates go on to take another certification with us – I think this is a good indicator of the happiness factor of NWA students.

That should cover it – by all means reach out if you have any further questions.

Hypnosis is Not What You Think

I feel the need to touch on hypnosis (since it’s part of the program), and there is much ignorance and pre-conceived notions surrounding it.

Chances are when you hear hypnosis, you imagine swinging pocket watches and talk of, “you are actually finding very sleepy.”

That’s Hollywood’s hypnosis. Genuine hypnosis doesn’t put you under a spell. It doesn’t cause you to blackout. No one will convince you to cluck such as a chicken upon waking.

But what it could do is calm anxiety, numb pain, induce sleep, and balance your nervous system.

It may even sound strikingly comparable to meditation. Except during hypnosis, you’re guiding the thoughts instead of letting them go by. You’re driving the automobile – but without the hard work, like zoning from your regular route home.

“Self-hypnosis, meditation, and other styles of mind-body wellness can help us bring our entire body – the disease fighting capability and the mind – right into a far better balance,” says Tampa-based therapist LindaJoy Rose, Ph.D., current director from the Natural Wellness Academy and former director for the American Board of Hypnotherapy.

And once you understand the gist of hypnosis you are able to use it toward anything, including minimizing the constant anxiety and rumination of current thought processes.

Here’s everything you need to know:

What exactly is hypnosis?

You might remember from Psych 101 you have two states of mind: the conscious, which is the tip of the iceberg above water, if you will – the active, analytical, problem-solving, and worry-creating portion of your awareness; and the subconscious, which holds everything just below the surface, like suppressed feelings, reflexive judgments, and underlying motivations. These are things you don’t actively think about but could bring into conscious awareness if you needed.

Hypnosis essentially tells your consciousness to take a backseat and lets you turn your attention inward to that deeper sense of the unconscious self, according to a 2018 analysis in Psychoanalytic Review that reports the practice temporarily suspends the mind’s critical faculties.

It works like this: In the beginning, either an in-person therapist or an audio guide is leading you with their voice. Just like with meditation, you’re focused on their voice and are practicing letting go of control over your thoughts. The guidance tells you what kind of images and thoughts to become absorbed in, then how to direct that toward healing activity within.

That state is called a hypnotic trance. You are in control the whole time – one of the biggest misconceptions of hypnosis is that it’s done to you, but really you’re guiding your thoughts, says Steven Gurgevich, Ph.D., a psychologist based in Tucson, AZ who has been teaching and practicing hypnotherapy for over 40 years.

And you’re totally aware of what’s happening the whole time. Just like how you can hear the TV making noise but not actually be listening, or stare out the window inside a daydream without actually seeing what’s happening, hypnosis allows you to direct your thoughts without actually engaging your mind, Dr. Gurgevich highlights.

That’s because entering a hypnotic trance change what elements of your brain are activated. One study out of Stanford University viewed the brains of individuals during guided hypnosis and found less activity in two key areas: the dorsal anterior cingulate, which manages thinking and motor control, as well as the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, which factors in a disconnect between someone’s actions and their knowledge of their actions. This uncoupling enables you to be a part of actions without bringing your consciousness into play.

Also, the Stanford team discovered that during hypnosis, there is certainly even more connectivity between two elements of your brain that foster a stronger brain-body connection.

This brings us to an important factor: What you imagine and the pictures you imagine have true power over the human brain. Studies show simply hearing words connected with physical suffering actually activates the regions of your brain in charge of pain perception in comparison to neutral words. Reading a summary of negative words, even briefly, makes anxious and depressed people feel more of it.

Hypnosis helps reduce unwanted feelings by repeating positive thoughts so they have got the contrary effect – rather than acknowledging that pain, you concentrate on feeling filled with healing energy, happiness, and simple movement which puts less attention on your own pain receptors. Instead of recognizing – and then thinking about – feeling anxious, you direct your subconscious on remaining calm and maintaining a balanced state.

So what is hypnosis utilized for?

Hypnosis, visualization, and meditation are all siblings from the same family. The primary difference is clinical hypnosis can be used for a particular purpose – an instrument to place your consciousness on standby and invite the mind to spotlight some type of healing or action.

“There is certainly less resistance with the conscious – the greater ‘judgmental’ area of the psyche – in order that through repetition you can change negative habits and instill positive ones,” Dr. Rose explains.

Super important fact: Your subconscious can be in charge of regulating all of your bodily functions, together with your lungs, heart, brain, digestion, nervous system, immune response. That’s how your organs function without active thought. And because your subconscious is currently driving the automobile, there appears to be a “communication highway right to the physical system,” Dr. Rose says. Among other activities, this enables you to attain your autonomic nervous system, calming the fight-or-flight response from the stress that you might possibly not have actually known was working away.

Studies show they have true power: Practicing hypnosis regularly might help you rest better, control cravings for bad-for-you foods, and reduce stress.

One research study out of Pakistan found adding hypnotherapy to cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) treatment significantly increased the improvement of depressive symptoms. Combining self-care and self-hypnosis significantly improved energy, rest quality, depression, anxiety, and worry in cancer patients, reports a 2020 study in Psycho-oncology.

It’s also commonly used to ease all degrees of pain, including for all those suffering a one-time burn, regular IBS symptoms, and dying from painful diseases.

Module 1: An Introduction to Coaching

Coaching isn’t just one thing! There’s a rich landscape of different approaches and a broad range of practices that may fall under the umbrella term “coaching”. In this module, Yannick will introduce you to the world of coaching and help you make sense of what it is (and isn’t). We’ll describe the exciting possibilities that coaching creates for you and set the foundations for the practitioner you’ll become as part of this journey.

We’ll introduce you to the key competencies we believe every coach needs in their repertoire which we’ll help you hone throughout this program. Plus, we’ll talk about why good ethics are important; not as a set of rules or laws you’ll need to follow as a coach, but rather a framework and a set of questions you can ask yourself to make sure you and your clients are safe and that you provide them with best practice. We’ll talk about where “the line” might be drawn between coaching, mentoring, consulting, and therapy and how to make difficult decisions as part of your coaching practice.

Module 2: Psychological Foundations

No two clients are the same. However, it’s probably safe to say all people come to coaching for the same reason: to make a change! But what underpins a client’s ability to make change? What is needed to be successful? To achieve goals? To be transformed?

In this module, we explore the psychological factors that underpin a coach’s ability to facilitate change in their client’s lives. We begin by exploring the reasons why people seek coaching; we then discuss the importance of helping clients become clear about their ideals of success and how that success is connected to their overall well-being. Fundamental to coaching is being open to possibility and providing a non-judgemental space.

However, this can be challenged when faced with a seemingly unrealistic client goal. We therefore discuss a ‘middle way’ approach that allows clients to experience success, even when faced with unachievable goals. We also explore techniques that enable clients to immediately begin walking along the path to success. The module ends by considering motivation and the deeper purpose and higher meaning of goals and our personal Ikigai.

Universal Coach Institute Review (My Experience)

Extracted From Comments:

“why not universal institute”? There were a lot of great things you mentioned about the institute. Is it really important to attend an accredited program?

To simplify my response to why Universal Coach Institute is not my first recommendation: You get what you pay for. I have recently invested in Universal Coach Institue as well to see what they are all about and to allow me to give people like yourself more insight into the program. I think one of the best questions I can ask myself when it comes to recommending a coaching program is: “would I Personally work with one of their coaching graduates?”. With regards to Universal Coach Institute, the answer would be no. If you are looking for a complete program that will allow you to start coaching once you graduate I do not recommend Universal Coach Institute as a first choice. If you know you will be pursuing further coaching education, or already have some past coaching education and experience, then it will be an excellent resource for you moving forward.

I do think it’s a great program though, here’s why:

Reason #1 – Coach Ayisha (owner and mentor)

Whether you decide to pursue any training with Universal Coach Institute or not, I highly recommend signing up to their email list for the 5 Day Challenge To Create A 1K to 10K Coaching Program free course. Coach Ayisha’s emails are invaluable as they are jam-packed with information. Doing this will allow you to experience Coach Ayisha as a teacher and help decide whether she is a good fit for you or not.

Reason #2 – The Extensive Amount of Tools and Client Handouts This is an invaluable resource. For those who are unfamiliar with the coaching process or the business aspect of coaching, there is an enormous amount of paperwork involved. Typically this paperwork comes in the form of coaching tools or exercises to be used with clients, legal papers and agreements, personal tracking, and finance paperwork. For those new to the business, this can be a huge learning curve that will be made worse by not knowing where to start. Fortunately, Universal Coach Institute has this completely covered. If you were to purchase similar resources elsewhere you will be looking at $100+, and it is all included in the Life and Transformational Coach Certification Program.

Transformation Academy Review (My Experience)

I’ve taken all 4 courses that make up the Master Transformation Life Coach Certification. I’ll review them each one by one.

All in all, I think Joeel and Natalie do a fantastic job at making their videos engaging. Their teaching style is better than most, in my opinion, and this creates a much more palpable learning experience.

Transformation Life Coach

This was hands down my favorite course of the 4 courses. I may be a little biased because transformational coaching is what I enjoy coaching on and learning about most.

Transformation is about who we are and who we want to be, not what we want to do. I was a little skeptical at first that JOeel and Natalie may get this wrong but they nailed it. This certification is all about who we want to be and not what we want to do.

Although much of the information in this certification was a review for me, it was a great reminder. Joeel and Natalie have a way of simplifying complex subjects and this allowed some of the information to sink a little further for me.

I resonate with the Hero’s Journey that they teach as I’m familiar with it. I’m glad it’s part of the course. I believe the Hero’s Journey is a great metaphor for the process we endeavor on our own journey of personal transformation.

There is a lot of teaching on beliefs; how we form them, how they affect us, how to release them, how to change them, and how to instill them.

Forgiveness Life Coach Certification

I’m glad to see this certification is part of the program as I think understanding forgiveness is a huge part of our transformational journey.

Forgiveness isn’t new to me by any means. I’ve had to let go of my fair share of resentments and to do that I had to understand what that meant.

Forgiveness is one of the most challenging processes one will ever have to go through, however, the rewards are liberating.

What I liked: The information was presented well, in an easy-to-understand manner for such a deep subject.

What I didn’t like: The co-presenter, Sheri Rosenthal, seemed somewhat inauthentic to me. I feel she lacked compassion and emotional validation for the pain others may feel. But hey, that could just be me.

Life Story Coach Certification

I found certification a little redundant after already completing the Transformation Life Coach Certification.

The gist of the certification is this—we create a story around our life and who we are based on our upbringing and the coinciding beliefs that accompany it.

The redundancy is surrounding the beliefs. Much of the information presented about beliefs is a rehash of the Transformation Life Coach Certification.

I do think it’s important to understand that a client’s story is just that, a story. Their story is not absolute truth, it’s their way of seeing their life, themselves, and the world they live within.

It’s extremely important that, as coaches, we don’t get caught up in the story we’re being told. Instead, we see it with curiosity, we question it.

Purpose Quest Workshop Facilitator Certification

I’m not going to be, this certification didn’t interest me much. I didn’t resonate with it as I have no desire to host workshops on people’s life purposes.

For this reason, I don’t remember much about this course as I breezed through it without being highly engaged.

erik erikson psychological development theory

Rebuttal to Erik Eriksons’ Psychological Development Theory

Working as a coach in the fitness and health industry, one of the most common beliefs that I hear is “I have been working out for X amount of years, I know what I am doing”. This could not be further from the truth. Your experience, not just from the perspective of working out, but from a universal perspective, is not guaranteed to provide you with any knowledge or advantage whatsoever. Let me explain why.

Below is an excerpt from my NLP Master Practitioner training course from a module titled “Psychological Levels Of Development” that will dis-spell the myths of:

  1. Experience = Knowledge, Skills, Awareness
  2. Age = Wisdom

Teachers’ response to my original answer for the module exercise:

” You have quite a comprehensive response to the essay and seem to have invested enormous energy in psychological development. According to the manual “It is easy to understand that a small child of five years of age does not possess the same knowledge, skills, and awareness that a mature adult of 50 has. Between five and 50 years of learning and experience for which there is no substitute. To achieve a similar degree of development as a mature adult, there seems to be no choice but for the child to get through a similar number of years, adding to his experience and awareness along the way.” In other words, a person’s chronological age must be equal to or greater than his or her psychological age. My question is this – would you agree with that statement or not so much?

My response to her question:

” In response to whether I agree with the logic behind the levels of psychological development not being able to exceed your chronological, I do not agree. It appears that presuppositions have been made to point to the fact that psychological development is absolute and not relative. The 2 main flaws I extracted out of that theory, among many, are:

1) I believe it is possible for one to gain 20 yrs of psychological development in say, 10 yrs. This can happen by actively seeking new experiences and avoiding complacency. If you compare that to one who does not actively seek new experiences and remains complacent, it is possible to see how there can be a huge gap in experience over time.

The person who comes home from the same job they have had for years, and sits on the couch for 5 hours to watch t.v will gain very little new experience compared to the person who is acting out in the world learning through various methods and growing as a person and professional.

2) The major presupposition that I feel was largely overlooked is that everyone has actually treated their experiences as an opportunity to learn. Meaning, they have created an awareness of their past experiences, created an objective awareness, and actively sought out to learn and apply their learning, which in turn will create even more new experiences to learn from.

In my opinion, wisdom is only gained from experience if you actually learn from it and apply what you have learned, otherwise you have not grown. I hope that what I have in my mind and what I articulated here come across the same. Thanks for the question, it made me think outside the box a little. “

Whether you agree with me or not on my rebuttal against the psychological development theory, I am sure we can both agree on one thing, and that is learning from your experiences will teach you more than not learning from them.

Are You Learning From Your Experiences?

Learn from all of your experiences, opportunities are everywhere.

Take care,

things to stop saying

Consider These 9 Things To Stop Saying, For Your Own Sake

If you can manage to eliminate these 9 phrases from your vocabulary you will transform your communication forever. There is an underlying theme to these phrases which I will reveal at the end, see if you can figure it out for yourself before you get to the end.

Before you keep reading…

As you go through each phrase, instead of imagining yourself saying it to someone else (which is what most people would do), imagine that you are on the receiving end of the phrase. Most times, when it is you who is the one saying these phrases you don’t see the hidden insinuations you are making or how someone could possibly receive what you are saying, regardless of your “intentions”. So I encourage you to take a few seconds and receive the message as if it is actually being said to you and see what feelings pop up.

“No Problem”

The problem with this phase is that it insinuates that there was a problem in the first place. By assuring someone that it is not a problem communicate to them that you assumed they thought it was a problem in the first place. Next time someone says “thank you” respond by saying “you’re welcome”.

If you don’t quite understand the effects this has, pay more attention to when others respond to you with “no problem” and “you’re welcome”. Analyze how you internalize each response, and in turn, how you feel towards each response. The results may surprise you.

Say Instead: “You’re Welcome”

“That’s Easy For You To Say”

First of all, who said it was easy for them to say, or do what it is they are saying? This phrase typically refers to an action to be taken and this response insinuates that the person you are responding to thinks it is an easy step to take. It is used for insinuating that, although something may be easy or simple for them, it is not easy or simple for you.

I find this is a highly defensive response that people use when they are insecure about their own capabilities or think that the other person is attempting to take advantage of them. The hidden meaning behind this phrase is largely dependent on the context in which it is used.

This phrase also makes a reference to your lack of belief in your own capabilities. For this reason, this is a phrase you will not hear a highly successful person saying.

“I Can’t”

“Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t–you’re right.” – Henry Ford

These two words are arguably the most destructive words you can say. Saying “I can’t” literally means you are stating that whatever it is that you are referring to is IMPOSSIBLE. This leaves you zero chance of accomplishing it.

Say Instead: “I Can”

“I’ll Try”

This phrase is typically used if you fear accountability. By saying this you are giving yourself a way out before you even begin. This way if you don’t do it you are off the hook since you never made the commitment “To Do” it. This converts your focus to the possibility of “not doing” instead of the possibility “of doing”.

Say Instead: “I Will”

“It’s Not A Big Deal”

Anytime you say this to another person you are minimizing whatever it is you are referring to. Nobody likes to have their issues minimized, what they do like is for you to at least try to understand. By minimizing their issue you are also making a loud judgment about them.

Say Instead: Nothing, listen non-judgmentally, be a friend.

“It’s Not My Fault”

This is a typical response from people who don’t take responsibility for themselves. Saying this is an intentional deflection to rid of any possible responsibility for yourself and put it on someone else and you literally add no value to the conversation. Next time, if it truly was not your fault and your actions had zero impact on the situation, try asking how you can help.

“Get Over It”

This appears to be quite the common saying these days. The hidden meaning behind this is similar to “It’s not a big deal” with the addition of a potentially more hurtful meaning. By saying this to someone else you are minimizing the situation and are additionally saying “I don’t care” or “I don’t want to hear any more”.

Say Instead: Nothing, listen non-judgmentally, be a friend.

“If You Love Me, You Would…”

This phrase is a true relationship killer. It is an attempt for the ultimate guilt trip, using life’s most powerful emotion against someone in order to get your own way. It is disgustingly manipulative. Although I don’t believe people realize that or have those exact intentions when they say it, it will have the same impact.

True love is unconditional and saying this adds a condition to the other person’s love. In addition to that, to what extent someone will go for someone they love is entirely subjective, and purely your own opinion. What you are asking them to do if they love you is not a universal rule that all people who love another must, and will do what you’re asking if they love you.

Say Instead: Nothing, listen non-judgmentally, be a friend.

“Whatever”

You may as well say what you really mean, which is “I care, but I am going to act like I don’t by telling you I don’t care because I don’t want you to think that I care” or “my ego has been hurt so please stop talking”.

The Common Theme

Each one of these phrases comes with hidden insinuations that have a negative incantation to them.

Do you know any other phrases that deserve to be on this list?

how to stop emotional eating

How To Stop Emotional Eating And Food Cravings

Let’s face it, we’ve all been there, that mid-afternoon craving, the dinners that aren’t complete without a sweet finish, the late evening crunch, and the uncontrollable urge to fill cravings when stress takes over your life. This can also be applied to alcohol for those of you who are constantly tempted by that ice-cold beer or a soothing glass of wine.

It is not the act of eating or drinking alcohol that is the issue of discussion, it is the reasoning behind those actions. Since if you are not eating or drinking for any other reason except a feeble attempt to elicit a feeling that you perceive as more positive or beneficial than what you currently feel, THAT is the problem.

Given that we are dealing with emotions here, your emotional distress may go very deep for some of you. This may take weeks, or possibly months of active re-conditioning to really take back control, while others may come to an abrupt end after having created a massive paradigm shift in the mind. Putting a stop to emotional eating or food cravings is not a quick fix, it takes a keen understanding, a conviction to change, and daily conscious reinforcement.

Hunger vs Cravings

Understanding the difference between true hunger and an emotional food craving is absolutely pivotal to your long-term success towards eating intuitively. Most people that are emotional eaters have little to no distinction between the two.

Follow the next step to help decipher between the two.

How To Control Emotional Eating With A Journal

Logging your cravings into a journal is an amazing way to start understanding how your emotions and habits affect your cravings. You can really start to decipher between emotional cravings and true hunger by using this tool.

Keeping a journal will encourage you to explore your thoughts, emotions, habits, and relationship with food in a way you have never done before.

I highly recommend you journal for a minimum of 2 weeks. This allows enough time for patterns to emerge. Nearly all of our daily actions can be traced back to a certain pattern. Once you are aware of the pattern, your brain picks up on this.

FREE JOURNAL DOWNLOAD

How To Control Emotional Eating Without Eating

Emotional eaters use food in an attempt to elicit a certain emotion they would like to experience. This is why it is paramount to log your cravings in order to understand what those emotions are. This will bring awareness to what you were previously oblivious to. If you haven’t already, download the journal from the link above, this will make much more sense when you take a look at the journal.

Common emotions that trigger emotional eating:

  • Despair
  • Boredom
  • Sadness
  • Unworthiness
  • Frustration (common from work stress)
  • Fear
  • Reward Based

One major flaw with using food in an attempt to re-balance your emotional state (beyond the obvious of adding numerous empty calories) is that any positive feelings that may arise from your emotional binge are TEMPORARY!

What happens an hour later when the high wears off and you go right back into that same undesired emotional state? Since you haven’t any other way to elicit the emotion you striving for other than stuffing your face with food, you will repeat the same pattern.

 Breaking The Emotional Eating Pattern

 STEP 1 – Get Leverage

The first thing you need to do is get real with yourself.  Write down all the ways that your current emotional eating pattern will cause you misery in the future when it comes to your health, relationships, self-image, career, and any other area of your life that will be affected. Don’t beat around the bush, and don’t butter it up. If you think your current pattern has the potential to take 20 years off your life then write it down! BE REAL!

If you do not get enough leverage on yourself you will not succeed. If you do not feel a compelling motivation to change the instant after you read what you wrote down then you do not have enough leverage on yourself. In other words, you need a stronger reason to inflict change.

STEP 2 – Replace The Pattern

Write down 15 things (or more) you can do that will generate the desired emotions you discovered from your food log. None of these things can include eating ANYTHING! Sure, you can cook, as cooking is a fantastic therapy for many people. Don’t be eating your delicious meal as your cooking it though! And no, baking a sugar-filled dessert does not count! Cook a meal that will add years to your life, not take them off.

Spontaneous Outcomes

This strategy relies on breaking the pattern through rearranging certain tendencies, or habits. For example, if you have a tendency to stay up late, say 1 hour later than you would like to go to bed, and this also tends to be a time when you do much of your late-night snacking, simply go to bed 1 hour earlier. By doing this you will effectively break the current pattern of associating snacking within that specific hour prior to bed, and an association with whatever you typically do within that hour before bed. If you completely eliminate both triggers then there is nothing left to associate late-night snacking with.

You can apply this strategy to any other evening tasks that are part of your ritual such as when you eat dinner, when you shower, when you watch t.v when you call your mother when you walk the dog when you go to the gym etc. Completely re-arrange when you do all these things, mix it all up, it will throw your mind for a loop, wondering what you’re doing in the shower when you are typically watching t.v and snacking at that time. There is a good chance the craving will pass since you broke your evening ritual pattern.

The way this works is you are taking advantage of the fact that humans are creatures of habits and patterns, and manipulating this to your advantage.

This is such a simple strategy that it can easily be overlooked. It is extremely powerful and so easy to implement!

How To Stop Emotional Eating Through Extreme Measures

Before reading ahead, you must understand that what I am about to discuss is not for the faint of heart. It is a drastic attempt to kick a particular food from your diet for good. It has the ability to be highly effective if putting an end to your emotional, and even habitual eating habits for good.

 The 24 Hour Strategy

The strategy here is actually very simple, you may even chuckle after you read it wondering if this guy is actually serious.

Let’s say chocolate is the bane of your existence and you must kick it from your diet for good. Buy all of your favourite chocolates, if it’s just one then buy 1 kind if you have 5 different favourites buy all 5. Make sure you buy more than enough to supply yourself as the only food you will be eating for 24 hrs.

Yes, that is right, eat those chocolates (or whatever food it is you’re trying to kick) for 24 hours straight. You are allowed no other food. You will get sick (literally) of your chosen food by the time those 24 hours are up.

The Premise Behind This Strategy

Most people can relate to this: Is there a certain food you cannot eat anymore because you have gotten sick off of it at one time? Maybe it was food poisoning, maybe you had the flu, maybe you drank too much alcohol, etc. The reasoning doesn’t necessarily matter, because your brain associates being nauseated with this particular food it has been conditioned to reject even the mere thought of it.

Your brain is currently wired to gain pleasure from eating your chosen food. The objective of this strategy is to rewire your brain to associate disgust with your chosen food.

Exercise is A Strategy – And It Biochemically Changes You

If you exercise or have exercised in the past, and you are mindful of your reactions post-exercise you will notice a significant reduction or elimination of cravings. This effect can last the entire day if you work out in the morning.

For those people who tend to reward themselves after meals or are late-night snackers, go for a 10-minute brisk walk and watch your craving disappear into thin air.

Exercise has been shown to reduce Cortisol (our stress hormone), increase Dopamine and Serotonin (which is why you feel great after a workout), and improve insulin sensitivity (which will stabilize your blood sugar levels). If you have unstable blood sugar due to a lack of insulin sensitivity, which is the gateway to Diabetes, you will tend to crave after your blood sugar drops rapidly.

Meditation Is A Strategy – It Also Biochemically Changes You

Meditation is gaining a very strong evidence-base towards its’ positive effects on the brain. One of the most notable effects is the ability of meditation to significantly reduce stress and change our state very rapidly.

The rapid change of state can instantly reduce your stress, and in turn, reduce your stress hormone Cortisol and raise your feel-good hormones Dopamine and Serotonin.

A great time to do a quick meditation is immediately after arriving home from work. This is typically when stress levels are at their highest and can last well into the evening affecting your quality of sleep.

For those of you who have never tried meditation, there is a fantastic app that you can use for free to guide you along the way. The app is called InsightTimer, you can click on the link below to download it for free.
