Welcome my friend,
I have an important message for you

As coaches, we’re involved with the inner working of other people’s lives—if we don’t know exactly what we’re doing we can inflict irreversible damage unto another.

Your Life Coach training is not something you want to cheap out on.

That said, I’d like to emphasize, that as a coach I don’t recommend any of the Life Coach Certification programs in this post.

Don’t get me wrong, they each provide valuable teachings to enhance a coach’s skill set and development.

However, there’s one unforgiving absence that I cannot overlook—and therefore

I will never recommend a Life Coach Certification that doesn’t offer this:

Live teachings, live coaching practice and live feedback. Coaching is a human-to-human experience and the following programs don’t provide this imperative element.

What they are good for is continuing education as they do provide some insights that you may find very valuable.

If not these programs, is there a cheap alternative that offers a live teaching and practice component?

Yes, fortunately there is.

Understanding that ‘cheap’ is a relative term, to my knowledge the cheapest alternative is an ICF accredited program from Universal Coach Institute.

If you’d like, you can get all the info you need in my detailed Universal Coach Institute Review.

So, What Are The Cheapest Life Coach Certifications?

I created this post to allow you to compare the most important factors in one place when choosing the best online Life Coach Certification for you.

Who is this post for?

If you have a budget anywhere between $500 – $5000 (installments are an option) and want the best bang for your buck, this post is for you. I understand this is quite a long post if you actually read it from start to finish, but I don’t want to leave any stones unturned.

You’ll be able to compare the most important factors when choosing the right Life Coaching Certification program for yourself using a head-to-head comparison table.

All the Info You Need in One Place

I’ve made contact with some of the providers as well in order to give you as much information as possible to help you make an informed decision

After researching over 30 different online life coaching certification programs, I narrowed it down to 6 that I consider the best bang for your buck within the $500 – $5000 range, 2 of which I have personal experience with.

I cover all the pros and cons of each program based on personal experience with 2 of the program providers and extensive research. I have reviewed each program in detail, I recommend you read each review before visiting the website of each program.

Word of Warning (Udemy)

I understand how tempting it is to get ‘certified’ on Udemy for $15 (some of them even off great info)—but take it from someone who’s coached others—if you want to be a great coach you need live practice plus feedback. Also, you want an extensive curriculum that provides 1-to-1 feedback on your coursework, otherwise how else are you to know how you did?

If you’re serious about this, and it’s not just something else to learn, I strongly recommend you do not cut corners.

Every course in this post offers live practice coaching sessions plus feedback on both your coaching and coursework. I will never recommend an online Life Coach Certification that doesn’t offer this.

Coach Training Alliance Review

I have to say, I am extremely impressed with the curriculum from Coach Training Alliance. If I wasn’t already enrolled at the iNLP Center there is a very good possibility I would have chosen Coaching Training Alliance based on the curriculum alone. Who knows, I may even take their program in the future since the two curriculums take a different approach and collaborate with each other.

Coaching From The Inside-Out

Based on the curriculum, the approach appears to be more an inside-out approach versus an outside-in approach. This completely aligns with my philosophy on coaching. The inside-out approach focuses on transforming one’s inner world in order to change their outer world. This is a different approach than the iNLP Center’s NLP approach where they are more strategy-based or outside-in coaching. This alone is the reason I would choose Coach Training Alliance over iNLP Center if I were to choose all over again.

Here’s an excerpt from their blog with more info:

A Program that Sets Us Apart

There is a Mind Dynamics module in just about every one of our cutting-edge certification programs in keeping with our philosophy that holism comes from incorporating Mind, Body & Spirit.  Mind is where my own journey as a healer began when I made the quantum leap from training in a more traditional psychotherapeutic approach to studying the subconscious mind, hypnotherapy, and Jungian psychoanalysis.  As an international trainer, I facilitated certification in hypnotherapy and mind dynamics in many countries and cultures.

The body is where I migrated when after years of grueling world travel, I developed an auto-immune disorder. Being incapacitated for some time galvanized me to learn about how food was impacting my health as well as other supportive lifestyle adaptations.

When we founded the Natural Wellness Academy in early 2013, my goal was to give holistic health coaches the superior advantage of being able to help their clients actually incorporate more lasting lifestyle habits, choices, and behaviors by incorporating Mind Dynamics into the curriculum.

The Mind’s Eye

The new Mind Dynamics Life Coach carries extra training and certification in basic hypnotherapy skills (Essential Hypnotherapy Skills) Having the ability to use hypnosis to help your clients control stress, conquer fears, boost their confidence and overcome negative habits will be a boon to your practice as more and more people are tuning in to the need to access more of their mind’s potential.

Blended Curricula Help You Case a Wider Net for Clients

Many of our coaching candidates are doing blended or hybrid curricula; in fact, a study done by our Board showed that 70% of NWA grads have gone on to take another program with us.  These are always offered at discounted prices.

For example, we have many Holistic Health & Life Coaching students who added the Essential Hypnotherapy Skills, recognizing that this would give their practice a “leg up.”  Here is a testimonial from Janett Nathal in Mexico City – she was part of our first graduating group from Mexico last year.

Describing the Mind Dynamics module and Essential Hypnotherapy Skills:

This program really represented a “before and after” in my life.  I got so many tools to apply to my own life – and to help other people in my coaching sessions.  I had always wondered about how much more we could accomplish by learning about the mind and now I’m totally convinced that hypnosis is a gigantic tool to help our clients achieve their healthy eating and lifestyle goals – really everything they want!  The mind can truly be our ally if we learn her language, and that is what hypnosis has taught me.   – Janett Nathal “BHealthy by Jane”

  • International Coach Federation (ICF) for CCE’s (18 hrs toward ICF Certification should you decide to pursue)

Natural Wellness Academy Review

I have personally been in contact with the founder, Dr. LJ. She is super friendly and I can feel her passion oozing through her emails. I get a real sense of hominess and genuineness from Dr. LJ.

She was completely transparent with me when it came to answering my questions. In my opinion, she went over and above what I had asked.

Here is a complete transcript from one of her emails:

Hi again, Rob – no worries!  Glad that you got the email and thanks for the kind comments.

There are definitely several aspects that set NWA apart:

  • The one-on-one mentoring is really significant for the students as they have someone to either cheerlead, counsel or motivate them to get through the program as well as finding an area of specialization or niche market.  All of our mentors are successful coaches and very upbeat people.
  • We take a very holistic MIND/BODY/SPIRIT approach and it’s kind of “impossible” for someone to go through our program and not have a lot of personal transformation and growth
  • We are starting to gear towards “hypno-coaching” – my background is as an international expert in the subconscious mind and in many cases, we will add on the Essential Hypnotherapy Skills as a gift or for a small fee to give the coaches an extraordinary extra skill and further reach.
  • Right now our “hot ticket” item is the CBD/Cannabis Coaching program, an explosive growth market.
  • We do blended programs for incredible pricing and we can also create hybrid certifications for students.  For instance, we have one woman who is doing a “Mind and Manifestation Dynamics”
  • About 70% of our graduates go on to take another certification with us – I think this is a good indicator of the happiness factor of NWA students.

That should cover it – by all means reach out if you have any further questions.

Hypnosis is Not What You Think

I feel the need to touch on hypnosis (since it’s part of the program), and there is much ignorance and pre-conceived notions surrounding it.

Chances are when you hear hypnosis, you imagine swinging pocket watches and talk of, “you are actually finding very sleepy.”

That’s Hollywood’s hypnosis. Genuine hypnosis doesn’t put you under a spell. It doesn’t cause you to blackout. No one will convince you to cluck such as a chicken upon waking.

But what it could do is calm anxiety, numb pain, induce sleep, and balance your nervous system.

It may even sound strikingly comparable to meditation. Except during hypnosis, you’re guiding the thoughts instead of letting them go by. You’re driving the automobile – but without the hard work, like zoning from your regular route home.

“Self-hypnosis, meditation, and other styles of mind-body wellness can help us bring our entire body – the disease fighting capability and the mind – right into a far better balance,” says Tampa-based therapist LindaJoy Rose, Ph.D., current director from the Natural Wellness Academy and former director for the American Board of Hypnotherapy.

And once you understand the gist of hypnosis you are able to use it toward anything, including minimizing the constant anxiety and rumination of current thought processes.

Here’s everything you need to know:

What exactly is hypnosis?

You might remember from Psych 101 you have two states of mind: the conscious, which is the tip of the iceberg above water, if you will – the active, analytical, problem-solving, and worry-creating portion of your awareness; and the subconscious, which holds everything just below the surface, like suppressed feelings, reflexive judgments, and underlying motivations. These are things you don’t actively think about but could bring into conscious awareness if you needed.

Hypnosis essentially tells your consciousness to take a backseat and lets you turn your attention inward to that deeper sense of the unconscious self, according to a 2018 analysis in Psychoanalytic Review that reports the practice temporarily suspends the mind’s critical faculties.

It works like this: In the beginning, either an in-person therapist or an audio guide is leading you with their voice. Just like with meditation, you’re focused on their voice and are practicing letting go of control over your thoughts. The guidance tells you what kind of images and thoughts to become absorbed in, then how to direct that toward healing activity within.

That state is called a hypnotic trance. You are in control the whole time – one of the biggest misconceptions of hypnosis is that it’s done to you, but really you’re guiding your thoughts, says Steven Gurgevich, Ph.D., a psychologist based in Tucson, AZ who has been teaching and practicing hypnotherapy for over 40 years.

And you’re totally aware of what’s happening the whole time. Just like how you can hear the TV making noise but not actually be listening, or stare out the window inside a daydream without actually seeing what’s happening, hypnosis allows you to direct your thoughts without actually engaging your mind, Dr. Gurgevich highlights.

That’s because entering a hypnotic trance change what elements of your brain are activated. One study out of Stanford University viewed the brains of individuals during guided hypnosis and found less activity in two key areas: the dorsal anterior cingulate, which manages thinking and motor control, as well as the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, which factors in a disconnect between someone’s actions and their knowledge of their actions. This uncoupling enables you to be a part of actions without bringing your consciousness into play.

Also, the Stanford team discovered that during hypnosis, there is certainly even more connectivity between two elements of your brain that foster a stronger brain-body connection.

This brings us to an important factor: What you imagine and the pictures you imagine have true power over the human brain. Studies show simply hearing words connected with physical suffering actually activates the regions of your brain in charge of pain perception in comparison to neutral words. Reading a summary of negative words, even briefly, makes anxious and depressed people feel more of it.

Hypnosis helps reduce unwanted feelings by repeating positive thoughts so they have got the contrary effect – rather than acknowledging that pain, you concentrate on feeling filled with healing energy, happiness, and simple movement which puts less attention on your own pain receptors. Instead of recognizing – and then thinking about – feeling anxious, you direct your subconscious on remaining calm and maintaining a balanced state.

So what is hypnosis utilized for?

Hypnosis, visualization, and meditation are all siblings from the same family. The primary difference is clinical hypnosis can be used for a particular purpose – an instrument to place your consciousness on standby and invite the mind to spotlight some type of healing or action.

“There is certainly less resistance with the conscious – the greater ‘judgmental’ area of the psyche – in order that through repetition you can change negative habits and instill positive ones,” Dr. Rose explains.

Super important fact: Your subconscious can be in charge of regulating all of your bodily functions, together with your lungs, heart, brain, digestion, nervous system, immune response. That’s how your organs function without active thought. And because your subconscious is currently driving the automobile, there appears to be a “communication highway right to the physical system,” Dr. Rose says. Among other activities, this enables you to attain your autonomic nervous system, calming the fight-or-flight response from the stress that you might possibly not have actually known was working away.

Studies show they have true power: Practicing hypnosis regularly might help you rest better, control cravings for bad-for-you foods, and reduce stress.

One research study out of Pakistan found adding hypnotherapy to cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) treatment significantly increased the improvement of depressive symptoms. Combining self-care and self-hypnosis significantly improved energy, rest quality, depression, anxiety, and worry in cancer patients, reports a 2020 study in Psycho-oncology.

It’s also commonly used to ease all degrees of pain, including for all those suffering a one-time burn, regular IBS symptoms, and dying from painful diseases.

iNLP Center Review

I have first-hand experience being a student at the iNLP Center. When I was first deciding which program I wanted to learn Neuro-Linguistic Programming from I had narrowed it down to iNLP Center and Life Potential Developments.

Why did I choose iNLP Center over Life Potential Developments? The answer to this is two-fold:

  1. After sampling what the content of the modules was and watching the free videos of the head teacher, Mike Bundrant, I was sold on the authenticity of Mike Bundrant and the program material.
  2. I signed up for the email list for Life Potential Developments in order to dig deeper into what they are all about since they didn’t appear to be as open and forward as Mike at iNLP Center. Although I liked the content, I was really turned off by the sales pitches marketing gimmicks in their emails, and the sales pages on their website that appear to be written by a Copywriter instead of an authentic human being.

Did iNLP Center’s authenticity hold up after becoming a student?

The short answer is yes. Mike is very straightforward and it is very clear that he has enormous experience in the field of coaching and therapy.

Extracted From Comments:

How are you feeling about your iNLP training now that it has been a few months since you posted this?

My Experience With iNLP Center I have experience with their NLP Practitioner and Master Practitioner certifications, not the full Life Coach Certification, although their Life Coach Certification encompasses both of those certifications as to its’ framework. I will try my best to give you my unbiased opinion of their program as I have had a change of heart regarding my opinion of using NLP as a coach. I guess that is a conversation for another day.

As someone who knew nothing about NLP prior to entering their program over a year ago, I feel they do a really good job of simplifying a potentially complex learning curve. As of a year ago, the one pitfall that I found for me was the lack of video content that could provide examples of how to use the information adequately in the real world.

They have since changed that though, they now offer high-quality weekly webinars on different topics (not just NLP), online interactive classroom sessions multiple times per week, and have added more video content to the actual modules.

To pass most modules you will have to complete two things: a Psyche Builder (using what you have learned on yourself) and a stealth mission and/or an assignment (for which both you will need a real-life partner). You will also receive feedback from their teachers on your homework.

In Summary, iNLP Center has a legitimate high-quality faculty, clear and concise teaching methods, and an amazingly easy-to-navigate back office for their students. It is part of my plans to post a full review of my experience with the iNLP Center in the very near future. Until then, I will be more than happy to answer any specific questions you may have regarding their program to help ensure you don’t regret any decisions you might make!

Extracted from an email I received:

Why the change of heart in regards to using NLP when coaching?

My decision had nothing to do with the quality of the program, it was personal.

After taking their NLP combo course, I realized that NLP didn’t resonate with me. I have nothing against it, it’s just not for me.

I’m grateful for learning NLP as it pointed me in a different direction and I have since gone on a spiritual journey that contradicts much of what NLP is about; a manipulative toolbox for the mind.

I prefer to transcend mind-made challenges, oppose to seeing them as problems and deciding which tool will fix it.

But, that’s me.

If NLP resonates with you, go for it! I don’t think you’ll find a more complete NLP-based Life Coaching program.

What people look for in a Coaching Certification is largely subjective so if you have any questions…please ask away!

An Introduction to Coaching

Session 1: What is Coaching
You may have heard the term “coaching” in a variety of contexts from sports to business and education. You may have experienced coaching that was very directive with clear instructions and advice on how to move forward, or you may have gotten to know coaching as a psychological journey that’s deeply transformational.
In this session, we draw the landscape of coaching and explain how it’s similar and different to other helping by talking practices such as mentoring, teaching, consulting, or counseling and psychotherapy so that you can understand its reach and possibilities.

Session 2: Coaching Competencies
There are certain skills, characteristics, and competencies that make for an effective coach. Professional coaching bodies such as the Association for Coaching (AC), the International Coaching Federation (ICF), and the European Mentoring and Coaching Council (EMCC) have created excellent competency frameworks that set out guidelines to help developing coaches orientate themselves as they learn to work with their clients. They’re all quite similar, so in this session, we’ll introduce you to the AC’s framework, which will help you to understand what’s required to become a great coach while setting you up for your accreditation further down the line (if you choose to go down that route).

Session 3: Ethics
One of the most important aspects of being a coach is to develop sound ethics. Ethics, in our view, isn’t a set of rules or laws you have to follow as a coach, but rather a set of questions every coach asks themselves on a continuous basis in order to make good decisions on how best to work with their clients. We’ll explain why this is important and how to make difficult decisions when faced with tricky situations as you begin working with your clients. We’ll also introduce you to the “Global Code of Ethics For Coaches, Mentors, and Supervisors”.

Psychological Foundations

Session 1: Why Clients Come to Coaching – Theories of Happiness & Success
People walk into the coaching room for a variety of reasons. Some have clear goals and ideas of success: a better job or title, more money or power, a new vacation home. Some have a feeling of being ‘stuck’ and ‘just can’t take putting up’ with the low level of discomfort or displeasure in their lives. In this session, we discuss the fine line coaches walk in helping clients to become clear about what they really want, their motivations behind their goals, and how success might look throughout the course of their life. We discuss the ecology of success, the link between success and
wellbeing, and introduce several models and theories (e.g., PERMA, 6-factor, Thrive & Survive) outlining the conditions for robust mental health.

Session 2: What We Can and Can’t Do – Theories of Change
Is the sky the limit? Can we really achieve whatever we set our minds to? What is realistic and what’s not? In this session, we discuss ways to overcome things that make the attainment of goals unlikely by exploring more deeply the essence of what it means to achieve our goals and the role of intentional activities. We then delve deeper into the pitfalls of ‘faking it until you make it,’ the power behind ‘acting as if’, and Prochaska & DiClemente’s theoretical model, commonly referred to as the Stages of Change. Finally, Catherine shares powerful questions that strengthen a client’s
belief in their ability to change.

Session 3: Why and How We Do What We Do – Theories of Motivation
What is it that motivates us to make a change? What are the conditions needed to foster motivation? And how do we sustain it? In this session, we discuss theories on self-determination and the conditions needed to foster intrinsic motivation. Catherine discusses the important contributions of humanistic psychologist Carl Rogers and his theory on self-actualization, peak states, and how we cultivate the ability to recognize congruence. Finally, we focus on how to sustain motivation by tapping into the higher meaning behind a client’s goals. Using language tools and logical levels (i.e., Chunk up, down, and across), we discuss practical tips to help clients dig deeper in order to become unstuck. To end the session, Catherine offers insights into how to navigate a world filled with ups and downs by connecting with our personal reason for being, our Ikigai.

The Coaching Relationship

Session 1: Why Diversity matters in Coaching
Diversity goes beyond race and colour to include culture, values, and personality. In the context of coaching it’s crucial to appreciate how we always meet “the other” in the coaching room. In this session, you’ll learn about how to use our differences as opportunities and get an insight into generational diversity as a starting point to understand diversity.

Session 2: Creating the Coaching Relationship
We’ll start with introducing the coaching relationship and why it’s the foundation for our work. You’ll learn how the coach and client relationships with each other in a professional context, why it is important to recognize the different roles we may hold as a coach, and how to talk openly with our clients about the way we connect and experience each other as part of this relationship.

Session 3: Creating Rapport
Given how important it is to establish a strong relationship, in this session you will learn how to create rapport with your clients. Creating trust, respect and confidentiality through empathy, curiosity, showing up authentic, bracketing your biases, and giving your client your full attention and presence.

Towards an Integrated Approach to Coaching

Session 1: Understanding yourself
“Who you are is how you coach” – a saying you’ll hear from us often throughout this program. Understanding yourself is one of the most important foundations for coaching practice. It will inform the way you work and provide valuable insights into your preferred coaching style and your interactions with your clients. In this session, Jonathan introduces a number of ways in which this can be done.

Sessions 2: Creating Your Coaching Toolkit
In this session, Jonathan introduces you to a wide range of practical tools and techniques to use with your coaching clients such as the empty chair exercise, Kurt Lewin’s Force Field Analysis, Peter Hawkin’s The 13th Fairy, Agenda Mapping as well as a number of simple problem-solving and idea-generating exercises.

Sessions 3: Developing an Integrated Approach to Coaching
In this session, Jonathan introduces his integrated approach to coaching and takes you through the 7 streams that feed into this model. Trialled and tested in many of the world’s largest organizations and applied with global leaders, you’ll get an insight into how this coaching approach is constructed with practical tips and pointers as to how you could develop your own integrative approach to coaching as you journey through this program.

Preparing to Coach

Session 1: Setting up the Coaching Space and How to Prepare for Your First Client
Coaches offer clients an escape from the chaotic busy world in which they live. When clients enter the coaching space, we must be ready, willing, and able to give them our undivided attention and focus. But what is the coaching space? And how do we prepare it? In this session, Chérie reminds us that as coaches we are an important element of the coaching space. Starting with our relationship with ourselves, we discuss how our presence creates a powerful beginning and opens doors for transformation. Chérie offers guidance on how to clear our minds, ground our bodies,
and prepare our physical and virtual coaching spaces. To end the session, Chérie shares a powerful personal ‘coaching prayer’ to help you prepare for your coaching client.

Session 2: Contracting and the Chemistry Session
Born out of the desire for something beyond the now, coaching is a relationship designed to bridge the gap between here and there. The effectiveness with which a coach helps a client move from what-is to what-is-possible depends on many factors. In this session, we discuss the purpose and key elements of a Chemistry session, which includes clarifying what coaching is and is not, how to assess a client’s readiness for coaching using the MMS 4 criteria (desire, willingness, belief, commitment), managing expectations, setting outcomes and, as the name suggests, whether there is chemistry between client and coach. Chérie discusses how contracting outlines the foundations of your relationship and deepens commitment and offers insight into the differences between written and verbal contracts.

Session 3: The Coaching Mindset and How to Get Clients From “I Want” to “I Have”
Is coaching something we do or something we live? Or both? In this session, we delve deeper into how a coach’s way of being is fundamental to building the bridge to a client’s wants, desires, and objectives. We discuss the anatomy of the “I want” moment, how to help clients become open to imagination and possibility, and how setting clear objectives creates and instills value for the client and the coaching process. Coaching is both what we do and who we are: an embodiment of ideals, thinking, and process for moving forward with life. Chérie offers 12 profound steps toward living the process of being a coach.

Session 1: Creating a Thinking Environment
In this first session, we’ll introduce you to the provenance and principles of the TE, illuminate different worlds of thinking, and highlight the importance of independent thinking. In the process, we’ll uncover 8 important observations and 10 components that build the foundation for a powerful coaching space.

Session 2: Levels of Listening
Why is listening so important? How well do people listen? What different kinds of listening are there and how do we apply them in a coaching setting? In this session, Linda will introduce several theoretical models of listening (Covey, Whitworth, Sharmer) as well as Rogers’s “sufficient and necessary conditions” as the
cornerstone for an effective listening environment. You’ll learn what it means to “actively” listen and the kind of skills and mindset you’ll need to listen deeply to your clients.

Session 3: Advanced Listening
Listening is an advanced art and this session will give you some insights into advanced models of listening. We’ll cover ego states in coaching as they relate to listening and delve deeper into topics such as attention, ease, equality, diversity, encouragement, and feelings. You’ll learn about Sharmer’s Levels of Listening and
hear from the founder of the Thinking Environment, Nancy Kline.

Session 1: Clean Language
When we think of language, we might immediately think of the spoken word. In the coaching space, however, communication goes well beyond what is said. Communication is a multi-sensory experience and is the conduit for creating possibility, allowing for transformation in our clients. In this session, we dissect the
dynamics of communications between coach and client. Fundamental to this is the coach’s ability to be transparent, fully present, and recognize and use the full range of communications. We discuss the definition of clean language, how we create our sense of reality, sensory representational systems, fundamental and generative states of being, and how to use words, tonality, parrot-phrasing, and body language to deepen a client’s experience.

Session 2: Irresistible Communication
In this session, we dig deeper into the three fundamentals levels of communication, building from the ground level (or presence) level to the physical level (Devon doesn’t give this level a specific name like others), where we discuss reading and the use of body language, to the linguistics level, where we learn to speak with congruency, integrity, and well-formedness. You will learn ways to adjust your message using a range of communication tools that feel irresistible to your client. It could be argued hypnosis does not exist. Some say everything is hypnosis. We discuss how to use this profound linguistics tool to focus attention and effectively drive the transformation your client is seeking. Bringing it all together, we delve deeper into the use of tonality, rhythms, and cadence and the primal, sensual nature of experience.

Session 3: Questions to Trigger Transformation
Ever wonder what happens when you ask your client a question? Probably not. Go behind the words to understand how questions are experienced and why they are powerful catalysts for change. In this session, we discuss what happens in the mind and body when a question is asked, how to notice the subtle changes of state in your client, and how to utilize this information to drive transformation. Learn how to artfully ask powerful questions, pair questions with storytelling, and slow down the process to deepen your client’s experience.

Session 1: Why Do We Need Goals?
What makes a goal achievable? Why is it important to understand how goals relate to success? In this session, David takes a step back to look at the purpose of coaching, the fundamental differences between coaching and mentoring, and their different approaches to achieving goals. He discusses where goals come from, what it means to achieve them, and the importance of linking goals to purpose. David also discusses the characteristics and categories of goals and provides tools and techniques to help clients not only set achievable goals but also to avoid the pitfalls when doing so.

Session 2: The Downsides of Goal Obsession
Working with clients to achieve goals is an important part of coaching. But can we become overly preoccupied with achieving goals? In this session, David discusses two ways to approach working with goals (inward vs outward), when is it beneficial to use each, and factors to consider with both. David discusses the importance of assessing intrinsic motivation and having a contextual awareness so that goals are not created in a vacuum. David emphasizes the importance of not getting fixated on achieving goals to the detriment of everything else. Instead, he encourages coaches to help their clients take a flexible, wider approach by shifting the focus to finding solutions.

Session 3: Using Goals in Your Development as a Coach
Have you ever experienced the awe of a powerful coaching session and then wondered how they did it? In this last session, David encourages coaches to set goals for their own coaching development and delves deeply into the concept of coaching maturity. This session is filled with information to help you become a great coach (e.g., stages of growth, levels of coaching, compassion, how to ‘free yourself from
the tyranny of the question’). David shares what it means to go from ‘coaching to clients’ to truly ‘being a coach,’ fully integrating what you do with who you are as a person.

Structure & Process

Session 1: Coaching in the Context of Our Times
Peter begins the journey with a brief history of how the modern coaching profession emerged from management and leadership training with the awareness that the most important tool was the leaders themselves: their ability to be self-aware. Peter discusses the ‘unholy trinity’ of challenges facing organizations today and the impact this has on clients. He challenges coaches to question ‘who we serve,’ by asking them not to view client issues as individual problems to be solved but as opportunities to make positive changes within the world in which we live.

Session 2: The Stages of Coaching – The CLEAR Process
Coaching is always forward-focused. But what does this mean? In this session, Peter maps out the key stages of a coaching session (using the CLEAR model) and introduces an approach he developed that enables clients to consider their future impact in the wider frame of life, or what he calls ‘future back, outside in.’ Peter discusses how systemic listening, continual contracting, and metaphorically inviting others into the coaching room (e.g., outside-in) enables clients to embody their new reality while remaining within the safety of the coaching space.

Session 3: The 4 Levels of Engagement – A Case Study
Working with a recently promoted female executive seeking to increase the efficiency of the under-performing staff she now leads; Peter presents a case study that employs a depth and process model. In this session, Peter introduces the Four Levels of Engagement Model (depth model), which aims to explore in-depth the underlying emotional triggers that create certain patterns of behavior. By going down (and back up) the levels, coaches can identify the patterns of behavior that form the basis of the stories we tell ourselves. After discovering the source of the client’s emotional trigger, Peter demonstrates how to move through the session using the CLEAR model by replacing, rehearsing, and reviewing the new pattern.

Relational Coaching

Session 1: Drawing the Landscape of Coaching Practice
Do you naturally seek solutions to problems? Or do you believe it’s more important to gain insight into a situation before looking for solutions? Do you find yourself offering support to others? Or is it challenging to push through? Do you see the cup half empty or full? In this session, Erik discusses the historical differences and similarities between the different approaches to helping conversations. Through the use of a metaphor to explore your natural ways of being, Erik shares a technique to help you identify the coaching approach best suited to you.

Session 2: The Basic Tenets of Relational Coaching & How to Find Your Coaching Style
How do authenticity, trust, and belief in yourself play a role in how effective you are as a coach? In this session, Erik encourages coaches to discover their authentic coaching style to increase their effectiveness as a coach. Fundamental to all coaching approaches is relational coaching. That is, our relationship with ourselves, our clients, and how we ‘meet’ in the coaching room. Erik discusses the tenets of relational coaching and how to work with the ‘here and now’ of what’s happening in

Session 3: A Case Study in Relational Coaching
Working with an international female senior executive seeking to improve her relationship with her boss, Erik presents a case study in relational coaching. In this session, Erik discusses the challenges he faced in working with his client and how her emotionally volatile interactions with others in her work and personal life led to a life-changing discovery. Erik also discusses working with leadership shadows, the ‘here and now,’ and the use of metaphors.

Coaching for Performance

Session 1: Foundations and Psychological Principles
The GROW model is much more than a 4-step process coaches use to boost performance. In this first session, Jon will introduce the psychological principles that underlie both the model and practice.

Session 2: Process and Practice
PCI’s website states: “GROW is more than a coaching model loved by the coaching community. It is also a top leadership tool that works across all disciplines and cultures. With its four deceptively simple steps, GROW has proved successful all over the world. It forms the backbone of coaching in many organizations and universities globally, due to the outstanding results. It helps people to achieve success personally or as part of a team.” In this module, you’ll learn how the model works in practice and how to apply it with your clients.

Session 3: A Case Study in Coaching for Performance
In this last session, Jon will introduce you to a case study to illuminate how he’s applied the model in practice with one of his clients. He’ll talk you through the practical issues of using the GROW model and share lots of practical tips and advice on coaching for performance as well as offering you a series of questions to coach yourself.

Positive Psychology Coaching

Session 1: Foundations and Psychological Principles
What makes us happy? Is happiness something we possess or something we find? In this session, llona introduces the science of positive psychology, or what is defined as the science of optimizing human function. Highlighting topics of particular interest to coaching clients, she discusses the similarities and differences between positive psychology and coaching and shares research on how positive emotions can facilitate change in the coaching space. She also introduces research on the characteristics of happiness and ways to build it and covers topics such as FLOW, mindset, motivation, strengths, resilience, and time.

Session 2: Process and Practice
Positive Psychology is an evidence-based science that often involves conducting surveys and assessments with large groups of people. In this session, however, Ilona demonstrates how practical positive psychology interventions (PPI) can be easily integrated into the coaching space and adjusted for individual clients. Demonstrating the use of the Happiness Map (or Life Map), she explains that many people find they are happier than they think when their whole life is brought into focus. Ilona discusses the benefits and offers tips and questions for two popular areas: Coaching for Happiness and Coaching for Strengths.

Session 3: A Case Study in Positive Psychology Coaching
Having worked with individuals to provide strengths coaching for over 15 years, it became apparent that a more systemic approach is needed to optimize the strengths and functions across the team. In this session, Ilona presents a complex case involving both individual and group strength coaching. We’ll discuss the structure of the two levels of coaching, the use of peer coaching, and reactions, challenges, and feedback from the team. Ilona demonstrates and discusses how novel assessments and activities are conducted, such as the use of a strengths inventory app,
strengths stories, collective job crafting, and a strengths marketplace.

Cognitive Behavioural Coaching

Session 1: Foundations and Psychological Principles
This session will focus on the principles of the cognitive-behavioural perspective. We’ll cover key assumptions of Cognitive Behavioural Coaching (CBC) theory, very briefly cover the history of the approach, note some key differences between CBC and CBT (therapy), and introduce common areas of application such as stress, performance anxiety, and procrastination.

Session 2: Process and Practice
In session 2 Rob will teach you about the process of how a CBC session may look like in practice, from drawing up a list of problems to applying CBC’s most commonly applied strategies such as the ABCDE model and how to work with behavioural experiments.

Session 3: Case Studies in Cognitive Behavioural Coaching
In our last session, Rob will offer practical tips and advice on working with a number of common problem areas such as perfectionism, procrastination, low confidence, performance anxiety, interpersonal disputes and being overly concerned with what other people think of us. Suggestions will be made on how to refer clients for further help and guidance if we encounter and signs indicating that the challenges a client brings to you may be too severe for CBC and may be better placed with a therapist or other mental health professional.

Kickstart Your Coaching Practice

Session 1: Getting Started & How to Get Your First Paying Client
Getting started with your coaching business doesn’t have to be complicated. You don’t need to wait until you’ve got the perfect infrastructure in place. All you need is a phone, a computer, yourself, and a coach. We’ll talk about websites, fees, taxes, packages, and the internal resources you’ll need to succeed. You’ll also learn
about the practical steps you need to take to sign up your first paying client, regardless of what kind of person you are or who you already have in your network.

Session 2: From Creating Conversations to Creating Clients
The most important element in getting your coaching business to succeed is to create conversations. This can start simply by talking to people in your local or online community. In this session, Carolyn will teach you how to move from a simple chat with someone you know or meet to inviting them into a coaching relationship. We’ll
talk about how to overcome resistance to “selling” by developing a genuine intent to serve our clients; you’ll also be presented with very practical examples and scripts you can use to sign up clients on a regular basis.

Session 3: The Ins and Outs of an Enrollment Conversation & The Art of the Proposal
Enrolling clients consistently is not magic! Once you understand the basic principles underlying what inspires a client to commit to the coaching process, you’ll find it can be easy and fun to have these conversations. After all, you’re inviting them to make changes that could transform the rest of their lives in ways they had never imagined. In this session, you’ll be given practical advice on how to structure such a conversation and how to send in a proposal that your clients will feel compelled to say yes to.

Bringing it all together

Session 1: Finding Your Unique Coaching Style – Toward Truly Integrative Practice
“Who you are is how you coach” is something you will have heard us say often during this program. As coaches, we naturally integrate what we learn with who we are as people. In this session, Yannick will introduce different ways of integrating what you have learned to form your own unique coaching style.

Session 2: From Trainee to Professional Coach
Now that you are coming to the end of your training, we’ll discuss the value and purpose of becoming accredited as a coach, lay out the route to professional accreditation with the Association for Coaching, and talk about the various ways in which different professional coaching bodies support our industry.

Session 3: Advice for the road
Arriving at the very end of our program, we’ll take some time to celebrate your journey, acknowledge the milestone you’re about to reach, and you’ll receive some very special advice for the journey ahead from our faculty.

  • Association for Coaching – The Association for Coaching® (AC) is a leading independent, and not-for-profit professional body dedicated to promoting best practices and raising the awareness and standards of coaching, worldwide.

More About Transformational Coaching

Transformational coaching is all about helping your clients to make a change whether big or small. Through transformational coaching, you should be able to help your clients discover their untapped potential that’s waiting to be unleashed. A complete transformational coach training program will teach you how to help your clients:

  • Understand their brain and make better use of it
  • Master their mindset
  • Overcome their fears
  • Find their purpose and discover meaning in their life
  • Avoid procrastination and gain unstoppable discipline
  • Destroy bad habits and adopt new, good, and fulfilling habits
  • Tap into a powerful flow state and perform at their very best
  • Have healthier relationships
  • Have better health and gain more energy and vitality with simple changes

If you are thinking of becoming a Transformational Coach there are a few essential scientific studies and techniques you should know to help your clients create lasting change.

Neuroscience Techniques

Neuroscience is the scientific study of the human brain and nervous system. As the understanding of neuroscience continues to advance, coaches will increasingly draw from this wisdom when helping their clients with:

  • mindfulness
  • self-awareness
  • motivation
  • resilience
  • optimism
  • critical thinking
  • stress management

Every client is different. What may work for one client’s personal development may not work for another. Coaches will need to be able to have an understanding and show their clients how the brain actually works; why some tools and techniques for personal development may or may not work for an individual; deliver results and be able to scientifically prove it. The study of neuroscience will help you stand out as a coach.

Positive Psychology Techniques

Positive Psychology is a recent branch of psychology and a philosophical approach that asks what is “going right” rather than what is “going wrong”. Positive Psychology is the scientific study of optimal functioning. It is an area of study that seeks to identify and promote those qualities that lead to greater fulfillment in our lives. It seeks to identify the strengths and skills that enable individuals and communities to thrive. We view positive psychology not so much as a distinct field, but rather a distinct way of viewing the human condition. Positive psychologists do not see people as broken or as having something missing. Rather, they see all people as having the potential to thrive given the right skills, strengths, and social context.

Motivational Interviewing

Motivational Interviewing (MI), a counseling style initially used to treat addictions, increasingly has been used in health care and public health settings. Motivational interviewing will help you coach your clients through the stages of change. MI is found to resolve ambivalence, enhance intrinsic motivation, increase self-efficacy, promote confidence in a person’s ability to make behavior changes. MI has been defined as a person-centered method of guiding to elicit and strengthen personal motivation for change. Strategies include reflective listening and eliciting change talk. MI encourages individuals to work through their ambivalence about behavior change and to explore the discrepancy between their current behavior and broader life goals and values. A key challenge for coaches is deciding when and how to transition from building motivation to the goal setting and planning phases of coaching. To address this, UCI presents a model from building motivation to more action-oriented coaching, within a person-centered framework.

Cognitive Behavioral Techniques

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a type of psychotherapy that is used to help people change thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that are causing them problems. CBT differs from other therapy approaches by focusing on the ways that an individual’s thoughts, emotions, and behaviors are interconnected, and how they each affect one another. Because emotions, thoughts, and behaviors are all linked and when negative, they prevent an individual from moving forward, CBT approaches allow for coaches to intervene using CBT techniques.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy combined with Motivational Interviewing

When MI is combined with CBT, it is effective in helping an individual to change a behavior that is not serving them in a positive way. It uses discussion, coping strategies, and motivational interviewing principles to help the person initiate a plan to change his/her behavior and motivate them to follow through. Throughout the sessions, the coach will guide the client through their plan to stop said behavior and will continue to motivate and encourage his/her progress.

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) Techniques

Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) is an approach to communication, personal development, and psychotherapy created by Richard Bandler and John Grinder in the 1970s.

  • Neuro means relating to the nervous system.
  • Linguistic is about language.
  • Programming here refers to habits.

Neuro-Linguistic Programming – using language to program our nervous system into more useful habits. Neuro-Linguistic programming’s belief is that we all build our own maps of reality. These maps, or worldviews, are filtered by our senses, experiences, beliefs, and neurology. In other words, many of the challenges we have are based upon our perceptions of the world, not the world itself. Neuro-Linguistic Programming is commonly understood as a set of tools that can affect:

  • Personal Change
  • Excellent Relationships
  • Producing real results in Life
  • Self-Motivation
  • Overcome blocks and challenges

NLP can affect these changes often extremely fast.

Combining the Techniques

All of these techniques can be used to work together in coaching sessions. First, you will be able to help clients to understand with scientific evidence how their brain works and why they do what they do.

Through neuroscience coaches will be able to explain, from a scientific point of view the methods and techniques of Positive Psychology, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Neuro-Linguistic Programming. When clients understand they will be less resistant to transformational coaching.

Second, you will be able to help clients to change their limiting thoughts, emotions, and behaviors from a conscious level using Cognitive Behavioral Techniques and subconscious level using Neuro-Linguistic Programming.

Third, you will also be able to help clients to create transformation by doing only what’s authentic for them and achieve optimal results through Positive Psychology techniques.

Lastly, you will be able to coach clients through the entire process of transformation, in addition, help them to maintain the transformation using Motivational Interviewing. Universal Coach Institute’s Transformational Coach Training and Certification program teaches all of the above so that you can help your client create total transformation and so you can stand out as a coach.

Universal Coach Institute Review

Extracted From Comments:

“why not universal institute”? There were a lot of great things you mentioned about the institute. Is it really important to attend an accredited program?

To simplify my response to why Universal Coach Institute is not my first recommendation: You get what you pay for. I have recently invested in Universal Coach Institue as well to see what they are all about and to allow me to give people like yourself more insight into the program. I think one of the best questions I can ask myself when it comes to recommending a coaching program is: “would I Personally work with one of their coaching graduates?”. With regards to Universal Coach Institute, the answer would be no. If you are looking for a complete program that will allow you to start coaching once you graduate I do not recommend Universal Coach Institute as a first choice. If you know you will be pursuing further coaching education, or already have some past coaching education and experience, then it will be an excellent resource for you moving forward.

I do think it’s a great program though, here’s why:

Reason #1 – Coach Ayisha (owner and mentor)

Whether you decide to pursue any training with Universal Coach Institute or not, I highly recommend signing up to their email list for the 5 Day Challenge To Create A 1K to 10K Coaching Program free course. Coach Ayisha’s emails are invaluable as they are jam-packed with information. Doing this will allow you to experience Coach Ayisha as a teacher and help decide whether she is a good fit for you or not.

Reason #2 – The Extensive Amount of Tools and Client Handouts This is an invaluable resource. For those who are unfamiliar with the coaching process or the business aspect of coaching, there is an enormous amount of paperwork involved. Typically this paperwork comes in the form of coaching tools or exercises to be used with clients, legal papers and agreements, personal tracking, and finance paperwork. For those new to the business, this can be a huge learning curve that will be made worse by not knowing where to start. Fortunately, Universal Coach Institute has this completely covered. If you were to purchase similar resources elsewhere you will be looking at $100+, and it is all included in the Life and Transformational Coach Certification Program. I have made a list of the handouts below.

Recommended Combo

Universal Coach Institute + Coach Training Accelerator

Why This Combo?

One of the major weaknesses I see in The Universal Coach Institute’s program is the lack of practical, real-world business integration. Slapping up a website, and calling yourself a coach, will not get you paying clients.

If we combine this with one of the Coach Training Alliance’s major strengths of teaching you how to actually attract paying clients then I think we have ourselves a win.

here’s a quick overview of Coach Training Alliance’s Coach Training Accelerator:

1. Coaching from Center

  • Centering yourself and creating your coaching practice out of your vision, your authenticity, and your passion.
  • Getting grounded.
  • Articulating to your ideal clients the benefits of your coaching.
  • How to offer sample sessions.

2. Impeccable Business Sense

  • Establishing a solid foundation for your business.
  • Building resources, networks and structures to support you and your coaching business.
  • Setting fees and taking actions with integrity.
  • Making the shift to thinking like a self-employed practitioner.

3. Effective Coaching Tools

  • Honing skills and developing tools for coaching.
  • The art of listening and asking powerful questions.
  • Responding to clients intuitively.
  • Strategizing and supporting your clients to take action.

4. Becoming a Client Magnet

  • Attracting clients in a fun and easy way.
  • Creating visibility and credibility while earning income and showcasing your skills.
  • Leveraging your marketing and engaging the high touch approach.
  • Creating a referral stream.

5. Masterful Coaching Sessions

  • Mastering the four elements of the coaching model.
  • Honoring the client’s agenda without hijacking it.
  • Exploring different coaching roads with clients.
  • Creating the impetus for the client to shift.
  • Framing the session with meaningful coach requests.

Frequently Asked Questions

Have you had any clients or others seemingly value any one life coach program over the other?

I have not. In my opinion, you cannot go wrong between Natural Wellness Academy and Coach Training Alliance as the #1 choice, given that you have the funds. They are both of very high quality with plenty of live practice and mentoring. It really comes down to what kind of coach you want to be as Natural Wellness Academy is more spiritual based and Coach Training Alliance is more inside-out based.

Did you think the Universal Life Coach program was worth your time, and which specific program did you take?

Their program has been updated and much improved in my opinion. I will leave my original answer from a question I received, but it no longer stands as accurate.

The most critical feedback I had regarding their program in the past has been resolved.

Lacking course feedback has been cleared up with me by Ayisha herself, and is a non-issue.

Lacking live coaching practice has also been resolved.

I can honestly say I would recommend their program as an extremely viable option now

*Original answer:

I took the transformational life coaching certification. I don’t think it was worth my time, I stopped going through the modules about halfway through for this reason. Granted, I wasn’t a beginner to coaching or many of the subjects that were taught within the curriculum.
I had already taken the NLP certification from iNLP prior to this, which was definitely worth my time and money. I cannot say the same for UCI. Keep in mind, this is just my opinion, but I wouldn’t want to be coached by anyone who got their certification from UCI.

Do you face much skepticism for your NLP background?

I have never faced any skepticism regarding having an NLP background. In my experience, people don’t even care about my background nor do they ask me. As long as they think I can help them, that is all they really care about. An additional note to that, I don’t advertise my NLP background either because I don’t use its’ strategies. As I learned more about NLP, something about it didn’t feel right to me. It helped me realize that having a toolbox full of strategies for different problems was not the approach I wanted to take.

It became too superficial for me personally, I wanted to connect with people on a deeper level. I wanted to transform people from the most fundamental level, from the inside out. This is something NLP will not do. I liken NLP to a handyman who brings his toolbox whenever there is a problem, fixes it, and leaves. Whereas I wanted to transcend problems to get people to see there is nothing to fix, this is more of the inside-out approach that CTA will take. Therefore, it all depends on what kind of coach you want to be.

Where does niche fit in with each program?

I think all of the programs understand the value of niches.

iNLP is more NLP based, CTA is more inside-out based, and UCI is a blend of NLP, Positive Psychology, mindfulness, and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.

I think you will know what you want once you figure out how you want to coach, and on what level you want to impact people.

Why my change of heart regarding NLP?

Do I need a qualification to be a life coach?

Some professional coaches look to eventually get certified with the ICF (International Coach Federation). You do not have to take one specific program to qualify for this. The iNLP Center’s NLP Life Coach Certification and Coach Training Alliance’s Coach Training Program are perfect examples. Their certifications both qualify for 60 hrs toward an ICF Certification. You may then take a different program that is accredited by the ICF to add to your hours. For more info go to International Coach Federation.

Many people over concern themselves with credentials and qualifications (in my opinion).

Ask yourself this:

Would you rather invest in a coach (not accredited by the ICF) who was referred to you based on that referring person having had amazing results or a coach accredited by the ICF who has little evidence of producing real-world results?

So… What is the best online life coaching certification program?

I want to make this very transparent, I have experience with both the iNLP Center and Universal Coach Institute, I have no incentives to recommend their programs over any others. I have the opportunity to receive a commission from all 4 programs should you choose to enroll in one of them.

With this out of the way, if you are able to afford the program at Coach Training Alliance I would recommend their program hands down. It is a very well-rounded program that covers all you need to know when starting a coaching business. Your marketing, website, business setup, and of course the transformational inside-out approach to coaching.

The iNLP Center takes 2nd on this one. The resources you have access to are endless, from blog posts to hours upon hours of every recorded webinar they have ever done. The live training is priceless. I can tell that they have put an enormous amount of thought and time into putting this program together.
